This is Chris\' log when he originally posted..

As many of you may know I was bit by a crotalus atrox 12 days ago. If you want to skip to the gross out photos (those of you who go to the stock car races in hopes of viewing a crash) they are towards the end of the post but, if you want to read the entire account here it goes......

Thursday was a typical day before the big herp trip for me, usually I make one or two big herp trips a year and several smaller weekend type trips. This 10 day group of events was one of the big ones 5 days of herping New Mexico, 3 days of West Texas, and 3 days for the 30th IHS conference in San Antonio. More than enough fun for a relaxed herp vacation. Everything was ready I had my 3 gallons of frozen gatorade, 5 gallons of water, and everything else for camping and hiking. Late thurdasy night around 8:30 or so, I received a call from RAK reguarding the current conditions for Val Verde county just as I finished loading my truck. Minutes later I began a quick 2-3 hour session of cage cleaning.
corns check,
kings check,
milks check,
ratsnakes check,
Then I began a rack that held 2 large New Jersey Pine snakes the first one had an immediate feeding response. This guy quickly shot out of the cage towards my face, luckily I was a bit quicker falling backwards to the floor and creating a loud noise. My wife was concerned and came rushing in to see what happened, I told her not to worry as I picked myself off of the floor.
The next cage held a crotalus atrox from the southwestern region of New Mexico. .....

I have over 10 years of experiance with poisonous snakes and 8 years with rattlesnakes. I try to be as carefull as possible and have always thought this day would come. The best analogy I can come up with is "if your going to ride a motorcyle then you have close to a 100% chance of crashing and a great chance that you will be injured severely" Well long story short I was riding my bike and yes I did fall off......
The exact minute leading up to the bite is a bit cloudy. I opened the cage tapped the atrox on the nose (not with my finger) with a field hook. He then zipped to the back of the 4 foot cage and into his hide box. Just as I have done several hundred if not thousands of times I used a steralite top to section off the hide box from the rest of the cage with one hand, in order to grab some fecal matter from the substrate. Here is where the cloudy if not clumsy moment approached, some how the animal zipped from under the aspen or just around the shield to hit me on the right index finger. Everything happened so fast, I only felt the powerfull force and didn\'t even catch a glimpse of the action. The fang marks were on my right index finger between the knuckle connecting my finger to my hand and the first knuckle of the digit (see gross photos below). Instantly I heard a "your screwed\' voice in my head over and over.

9:05 P.M. time of bite....

MINUTE ONE.....

lots of blood from the puncture and lascerations
lots of washing and cleaning at the sink
calmly tell my wife (who was in the shower) that I was bit by a rattlesnake.
the pain was tremendous, due to the long fangs and sharp curve normally associated with an atrox. Almost like his fangs went in and then ripped out tearing flesh along the way.
walk back to the snake room to make sure it was an atrox and not a taipan. just kidding I do not keep exotic venemous..
make sure atrox is caged

MINUTE TWO

Cell phone conversation with an associate working at the houston zoo reguarding cro-fab availability at Herman and Ben Taub hospital. Both are very good but I was advised that Herman would definately have cro-fab.
sharp metallic taste in the mouth
pain subsides a bit
wife calls 911 in a frantic panic state

MINUTE THREE-FIVE

feet felt very heavy and entire body is very sensative,
slow motion and waveyness kinda like drinking a bottle of tequila
callapse on floor
shake and convulse vilantly for several seconds like a bit rat that had been bitten
pick myself off of the floor
repeat three more times (according to my wife) I was out of it
wife freaks out thinking I was nearly dead, like a rat that was bit by a snake

MINUTE SIX-TWELVE

wake up feeling fine
drink 2 bottles of water (dry throat and tounge)
finger still hurting
some swelling
I was calm and alert waiting on transportation
Finally I make it to the truck, while my wife was still talking to 911
told her that we really needed to leave and we could meet an ambulance in route

1/4 mile down the road we met the ambulane near minute 13 or 14

We flagged the ambulance down. I was on my cell phone talking to my life insurance adviser, not really. Actually I was talking with another friend so he could meet me at the hospital and so he could talk to the doctors and give them important information in case I was unable to.

MINUTE 20

questioning from the ambulace paramedic
what kind of snake
how big
where are we going
cro-fab what is that
IV hook-up
he asked me if I had nausea
I said no
two minutes later I puked up 2 bottles of water along with lots of blood
ride to herman hospital

MINUTE 50 or so..

arrive at herman hospital
greeted by a couple of family members
lay on stretcher surrounded by nurses and dr.\'s in ER room

The next 2 hours or so is very cloudy,
lots of in and out of reality
lots of dry heaving
morphine
antibiotics
droopy eyes extreme tiredness feeling
slurred speach (no I wasn\'t drinking, I never mix dangerous snakes with alcohol)
Sometime between 12:30 and 1:30 crofab was mixed. .....10 vials........ Sometime between 1:30 and 2:30 I had a 100% positive response to the meds
Lots of family members showed up along with friends. One friend had multiple discussions with the Doc reguarding what kind of snake, how large, and similar questions. Luckily I filled him in on everything before I was unable to talk very well. He told them it was a western diamond back, they came back to make sure it was a western copperhead. ...... no no it was a western diamond back......goofy dr. moment....

Anyways, family went home around 4, I was transported by a nurse into the intensive care unit, and had to wait untill 7 for breakfast.

Friday, the next morning, I felt fine other than a catchers mit for a hand and lack of sleep. I did have some clotting problems but that all went away later the same evening.
More friends came by, I felt sorry for them having to pay the 10 dollars each for parking.
More IV antibiotics and some morphine.
Saturday was more of the same....
I met a local TV icon, Dr. Redd Duke. He came by to see me and said "ohh that looks like a nasty bite you need to keep it clean and elevated I\'M Dr. Redd Duke" That isn\'t exactly what he said but I figured some of you Houstonians out there would get a kick out of it. He actually told me a story about a shrew eating a snake in a cage.
Saturday I got my own room and a TV to watch, the SIMU area wasn\'t fun.
Feeling fine I wanted to go home but they wanted me to stay put to fight any possible infection, I obliged and watched more venom ER on Animal Planet.
Monday the 19th I was sent home.

Cool shots of the snakes. I heard that my step father killed one earlier today. Well, now it\'s after midnight, so yesterday. The odd thing is, it\'s too cold of weather for them to be out right now. I hate rattle snakes. They were always crawling up in the front yard back when I was still living with my folks. "Shudders"
