Tough Job Decision! Interview Update! - Martoch - 05-17-2007

Yo! <img src=\"http://forums.NIGHTOWLpro.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"Big Grin\" border=\"0\" alt=\"biggrin.gif\" /> So I have a job issue going on right now...let me break it down for you.<u>Job #1 Facts</u>- It's working outdoors (using a shovel) in the FL summer heat- It's 100% guaranteed and starts Monday- 1/2 hr lunch that must be taken on site- Pay is $15/hr- It's temporary and will only last until August<u>Job #2 Facts</u>- It's exactly what I want to do as an IT technician - I interview for it tomorrow at 1pm (they will only be interviewing one, maybe two other candidates)- It's permanent- They need to hire somebody immediately- 1 hour lunch and it's up to me where I eat- Pay range is between $15-$24/hr, pending negotiationsI absolutely want job #2!Here lies the problem. In order to secure job #1, I have to pick up my paperwork by 4:30 tomorrow. If the hiring person from job #2 isn't able to tell me if I got the job or not following tomorrow's 1pm interview, what do I do? What if I start working at job #1 on Monday and job #2 calls on Monday (or Tuesday, etc) and says, "you're hired, come in tomorrow"? Job #1 is guaranteed, but job #2 is the one I really want to have...but I won't know how long it will take for them to decide who they want to hire...although they did tell me they want to hire someone right away. Here's what I plan on doing. I'm going to be 100% honest with job #2 during the interview tomorrow and tell them about my predicament. I will ask if there's any way possible for them to give me an indication of whether or not I have the job following the interview. Also, if they absolutely can't tell me if I'm hired or not by tomorrow, I was going to ask job #1 if I can delay starting until later in the week. Hopefully that will give job #2 time to make a decision and let me know who they picked. If I don't take job #1 and job #2 doesn't pick me, then I'm totally jobless. If job #2 tells me tomorrow that the IT job is mine, then my worries are over. What do you guys think? Have I confused you enough yet? <img src=\"http://forums.NIGHTOWLpro.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"\" border=\"0\" alt=\"wink.gif\" /> Any thoughts on the matter are welcome...thanks!~Me

Don't tell the IT guys about the first job. Then they may give it to someone else considering you have something to fall back on. Go to work at job #1 on Monday and work there until job #2 calls you if they call you. At least that way you can get paid while job #2 makes up their mind on wether or not they want to hire you. Some money is better than no money right?

I guess my "issue" would be just walking out on a job after I said that I'd take it. Sure, it's a temp job, but I've always been raised to be honest and not screw around with people. I suppose I should learn to look out for myself more than others, though. This is a quote from another friend of mine concerning me walking out on job #2.<!--quoteo<div class=\'quotetop\'>QUOTE</div><div class=\'quotemain\'><!--quotecIt might look selfish, but its a big bad world full of selfish people who have jobs and people with consciences who don't.<!--QuoteEnd</div><!--QuoteEEnd

Do not tell them you are considering another job.And I wouldn't worry about quitting the other place if you get a better job offer. You definitely need to have an income.

Exactly.

look at it from their point of view if they wanted to fire you, what kind of consideration would they give and how would they treat you.

I agree also. Do not tell them about the other job. If I were you I would take job #1 so you at least have a job. If job #2 calls you and offers you the job take it. But ask if you can start in a week or 2 to give job # 1 to replace you.

Tough Job Decision! Interview Update! - Martoch - 05-17-2007

That's the problem...job #2 can't wait a week or two...they need somebody immediately. Whoever they pick will be asked to start ASAP. I guess I would just have to get over my "good guy" attitude and walk out on job #1 if #2 picks me. I sincerely hope #2 picks me because I can assure you that I do not want to be slinging dirt in 100 degree weather all summer long. <img src=\"http://forums.NIGHTOWLpro.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"Blush\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blush.gif\" />

If that's what you have to do then I say do it. If job #2 wants to hire you tell job # 1 something came up and this just can't work right now. I'm not a fan of doing that to people my self but I think your way better off with job #2. It's one of those times where you need to just think of your self.

Weigh the considerations.....On the left... letting down employer at job # 1 for leaving after only a few daysOn the right... better, permanent support for your son and wife.Easy decision <img src=\"http://forums.NIGHTOWLpro.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"\" border=\"0\" alt=\"thumbsup.gif\" /> Good luck.
