Plasma Or Lcd Tv? - robocop - 09-12-2010

Hi guys. Well my tv is going on 11 years now so it seems like its time for an upgrade. I'm looking at going for a 42" model for the space I have. I'm not sure if i should go plasma or lcd though. I would like to get one thats 1080p but 720 would be ok to.

What i don't like about the plasma's is the super shiny screens. What do you guys think?

Lcd is the way to go. Plasmas get way more hot and will actually leave color burns on the screen over time. neither of the 2 will last as long as youre old tv though. most usually say 40-60,000 hour life right on the box. So when youre not watching it, id suggest turning it off to save the life of the tv. thats the only downside on the plasma and Lcd vs the old schools that last 20 years. I have a friend who works at home video/audio store, so Ive had a vast training on the 2. I have a 52" samsung 1080p lcd 120hz. Also you want something with a real high contrast ratio. The higher the number the darker the blacks . I know samsung now has a 5 million to 1 lcd for around $2000. thats off the chain nice. Samsung, and Pioneer make the best lcds. hope this helps

It's all a matter of preference some people like Plasma and some like LCD, I chose Plasma because of the deeper blacks for watching movies and I have never had a problem with burn in, That was a problem in the past with older models.

I always suggest this site whenever a TV topic pops up http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/

I have a Panasonic 127cm Full HD Plazma. On a bright day, i have to close the blinds to watch a movie.

Have you check out LED TVs? Samsung LED TVs look amazing!

I have to go with plasma. I have a plasma 46" Samsung and love it! I have had my TV for 3 years now and use it everyday as my PC monitor for gaming and of course watching TV. My 3 year old 720p is far more superior imo than my friends brand new Mitsubishi 50" 1080p lcd when it comes to brightness, clarity and motion lag.

As Dougie mentioned burn in is a thing of the past. plasma tv's also have better contrast ratio and ability to render deeper blacks. Better color accuracy and saturation. Better motion tracking (little or no motion lag in fast moving images).

Plasma screens typically have better viewing angles than LCD too.

good luck, let us know what you decide on.

Yeah that is one of the downsides to plasma.

LCD's have increased image brightness over Plasma, which makes LCD TVs better for viewing in brightly lit rooms.

I own a 50" Panasonic Viera Plasma and I LOVE it. It does run on the hot side but I have noticed absolutely no burn-in despite every day use for the last 2 years. I considered getting an LCD but I didn't like the dimming of the image at angles and the noticeably higher price to get the 120 hertz LCD to prevent image dragging. The Plasma was my choice and I haven't regretted it. But.. technology will and is changing so maybe things are different nowadays. That LED LCD is wickedly amazing, though.

I also have a Vizio and love it and for the price its well worth it. Also used to thave a Plasma in the other room but got rid of that one and got a LCD to replace it and well worth it.

i have one 3 year old 42 inch plasma in my basement and one 3 month old 40 inch lcd in my living room. The plasma as better blacks and i prefer the image also. The only reason why i have an LCD in my living room is that i have a big 10 foot long window and lcd performs better in hi lighting condition. All in all i think both are a really good choice just a matter of what are your needs and your expectation.

my biggest problem i have with plasma is that stupid glare on the screen from everything . also the fact that plasmas die sooner than LCD . it does have a sharper picture than LCD but i've heard it's not real good to leave things like movies or games paused for very long as it burns the image into the screen .
