Yes, you are able to do just that. I do it all the time and all you need are these two programs:

DVD Decrypter to rip the movie

DVD Shrink to compress the movie to a smaller size

Both programs are free and by far the easiest solution to rip and burn a movie. Install both programs on your pc. Start Decrypter and insert your DVD movie in your drive. There is a little button that shows a DVD and a hard drive, click it and the movie is decrypted and copied onto your harddrive. You can find in under the c drive as a folder with either the name of the movie or DVD_movie or something similiar. These folders are usually around 12 GB in size which is fairly big, so if you want to you can use Shrink and click open file, open the folder where your movie is located and shrink will evaluate the movie. Now it lets you remove subtitles or special features if you want to (this feature helps to free space so the file doesn\'t have to be compressed that much). Once that is done click Backup and create a folder on your harddrive with the movie name, save the backup in there or burn it straight onto a disc. The file will be compressed to 4.7 GB so you can burn it onto a DVD disc after I you want to. If you do compress the movie make sure you delete the 12GB folder to free up some space on your drive! Hope this helps bud, anymore questions feel free to pm me!

I use DVD Shrink to make the ISO (image file) and Alcohol 120% to burn the image on to the DVD. Takes about 40 min to complete the process.

DVD Shrink is all you really need if you are looking to make a backup of a DVD. Its a great program and its free.
