Way Off Topic... - FullMoonFever - 10-21-2005 Okay, so my left ankle has been acting up like crazy. It swells to like double the normal size. At first I thought it was my new skate boots, but it turns out it fills with fluid when I\'m on it alot. *grumbles* I\'m not complaining or anything, but I\'m wondering what I could do to it besides icing it, heating it and soaking it in warm epsom salt water. I\'ll be really upset if this continues because I\'m an avid rollerskater and having to quit skating would really suck... Any ideas? ~Jenn Way Off Topic... - Cryptoys.com - 10-21-2005 Cut it off, spray it with clear coat and use it as a prop. Way Off Topic... - travsall - 10-21-2005 Hmm, that doesn\'t sound good at all. Fluid on a joint is always a sign of bigger problems, your body is compensating by adding more padding to the effected area essentially, protecting it. Best way to deal with it unfortunatly is have it drained, by a doctor, I wouldn\'t recomed doing it yourself, it makes a big mess and isn\'t that easy, trust me. Where it\'s swollen, is it hard to the touch? If that\'s the case, more then likely it is gout, a build up of salty fluids in the extremeties, in that case you\'d have to alter your diet and cut out high in salt foods and drink. I know red wine is terrible for gout, and the better the wine the worse it is on the condition. It could be a compression sprain, having your ankle in the boot for real long periods of time can wear on it, and the repeating the problem will aggrivate it more. For home relief, don\'t ice with fluid, elevate it above your heart and stay off it. I would suggest you have a doctor look at it, and give you a proper diagnosis, like I said, fluid can be a sign of other things. Way Off Topic... - FullMoonFever - 10-21-2005 I have been to the doctor, and had it x-rayed. It only swells up at the end of the day. And I have been elevating it every night. It\'s not hard to the touch its more gooshy. The doctor didn\'t say anything about having it drained, but if it persists a bit longer then I\'ll be going back definitly. and yes if I could cut it off, providing I\'d grow a new one I\'d turn my foot into a prop ~Jenn Way Off Topic... - travsall - 10-21-2005 Okay, good news on the non hard part. Sounds like it is just from overuse and stress on the ankle then, you can get it drained for sure if it is really bothering you, not the most pleasant thing to have done, but it works and if you take care of it, it\'ll heal up quick. Only real thing that\'s gonna make it better though, is rest, stay off it as much as you can, maybe a week off from skating and keep the elevation going. A heat pack for 15 minutes, then an ice pack for 15 would be a good thing too, since it is soft and gooshy. Always go heat first for the muscle, then ice for the joint. Good luck with the ankle, hope you recover soon and fully! Way Off Topic... - Ben_Forsaken - 10-21-2005 Dr. Trav knows his she-at.
