Question? - kirk myers - 11-07-2005 Im not sure if im thinking right, but is there a place that is a college for special FX or a place that has to with special FX, sculping and stuff of that nature? After I graduate high school id like to go on to do special fx for low budget films and word my way up. If theres anything ANYONE can help me with, then please do. Email me, post, or PM me. Thanks guys! Kirk Question? - Mutilated - 11-07-2005 the art institute of PA and Tom Savinis school of makeup and special FX also in PA. That\'s where i\'m heading right after highschool. Question? - kirk myers - 11-07-2005 Thanks Fang! Thats what I was looking for was Tom Savinis makeup FX. Id love to go there, and hopefully I will Question? - Mutilated - 11-07-2005 I belive it costs somewhere around $22,000 not 100% sure but I think that\'s it. Goodluck man, hope to see you there. Question? - the green ghoul - 11-07-2005 The best thing to do is start sculpting now. or learn all of it but find the thing you like best and mmaster it. If you get a job in a shop you will be more than likely be working to your stregnths . If you tell a shop you make mold more than likely thats what you will be stuck doing. I would avoid those schools unless you wanna be paying it off for the rest of your life like a few friends of mine. I won\'t elaborate too much because it may offend someone . Of all of the people i knpow that wentt there thhey never met Savini once. The best thing to do it study study and move to LA with a portfolio or sweep a shop floor. If you wanna be an FX artist learn anatomy and practice. i recommend getting some How to videos from www.makeupkits.com the alfrey vids are cool as well as the master class dvd\'s Justin Question? - ZombieBloodLust - 11-07-2005 I 100% agree with Mr. Mabry, schools for FX in my honest oppinion are a waste of money, there is nothing they can teach you that spending 500-1000$ on books videos and supplies can do. Seriously, teach yourself bro. Sculpting mold making, basic latexing fx... Hell, the internet is one big classroom! if i have a question the net is where i get my info. Schools never gaurentee a job in anything, honestly from what ive read and experienced, most who go to savini\'s school don\'t get much farther than mold maker or floor sweeper, and that burns people out.So the dream dies and they have a nice school debt to pay. Then again, this could work for you, it could give you what you need to do it. with the minimal experience i have in the field, MAKEUP FX is more like construction job than the glamour of hollywood, don\'t expect to get rich doing it . its a job , and its not an easy one. I don\'t mean to dash your dreams but its 100% true. Ive been there and ive seen how it is and it blows. ill stick to freelance student films and independants, its a shit load more fun and people actualy appreciate your hard work! so get some books, fire up the vcr and start cooking up some awesome stuff man! let this board and other "monster" boards be your teacher, let us critique and give advice on your work, who better than us fx horror sci\fi freeks? we are demanding and want it right lol!..................good luck bro! If I were you i\'d take their advice and order videos and do it from home and save myelf $20,000. Or if you want, you could try and get into dick smiths course. You dont go to a school but you work from home and he\'ll send you his PERSONAL notebook for $2000 telling you everything you need to know to succeed. Question? - kirk myers - 11-07-2005 Thanks for the info Justin. After Fang told me about the price I was like......wooooooow Im gonna start getting into doing it myself and would love to find a place to start working and do what I like doing. Question? - WarLocK - 11-07-2005 Too bad you don\'t live near Atlanta. My friend Matt Green is an FX artist who used to work w/ Savini and did many films. He is currently looking for an apprentice to help him out. He\'s a great teacher! If I didn\'t work a fulltime degree-related job, I\'d be helping him right now. |
