Sculptinng Thickness Question - shadowmyst - 09-10-2008

How does one accomplish even thickness of clay around an armature? And how thick should the clay be if say for example your were planning on making a mask out of it?ThanksNick

In my short experience I have found that the clay does NOT need to be any certain thickness, just make sure it is bigger than your head if you plan on making masks out of it because latex shrinks slightly when it is drying and curing.

The clay should be at least an inch thick on the armature.Latex shrinks approximately 15%. If you make a master copy and then make production molds, the masks from the production mold will be 30% smaller than the original sculpture.

Whoa, all I did was ask for some advice and instead it turned into a war zone. Tempers are high! By the way I have another newbie question, whats the best way to smooth out the sculpt so there aren't any "thumb pressing marks" on it? I have to admit, even if I never really improve on my sculpting I find it to be a great stress reliever.Nick

For wed clay, paintbrush or sponge and a little bit of water will do it, for Oil you need to build a rake tool and use rubbing alcohol with a paintbrush.
