They introduced a little alternate reality game for people to follow along leading up to the events that happened in the city. They went as far as creating active My Space pages for the characters in the movie, and website for the company that Robert was leaving for and a whole bunch of other stuff. It was pretty damn cool!

Yea, Robert was leaving home to be Vice President of Slusho industries. Slusho is an actually company that sells slushy drinks. Basically Japan's version of the "slurpee". If you look closely, you even notice that his brother in the film is wearing a "Slusho" t-shirt, which was probably given to Robert free seeing as how he is going to be VP. The satelite which fell from the sky is just your average satallite, no big deal. However, Ive heard stories that some funky chemical on or in the satellite is to blame for the parasites that live on the creature. As if they were normal crab-like sea creatures that mutated and began to feed off of the algea that's on the monster. Much like pilot fish that swim alongside sharks.

Tommy, here is a forum thread that documents pretty much everything on the ARG to Cloverfield! For those who followed it, in my opinion it made the movie a lot better; http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23861
