The Big Bore...uhh...the Big Four - stretchbaldy - 09-17-2009 [quote name='Chainsaw' date='Sep 16 2009, 04:44 PM' post='330265']I'm not sure I get this comment. You don't collect anything but Jordu pieces so why should it matter? Just asking.Ive collected many different types of masks. My comment was not meant to upset anyone. I have just always felt that same way Larry does and I have just never raised the questions myself. To be completely honest with you I think multiple versions of the same characters is just very boring to me. Just my opinion. What does collecting Jordu pieces have anything to do with it? Because I do not collect the "big four" means I cant have an opinion? The Big Bore...uhh...the Big Four - monteburns - 09-17-2009 I am happy with one really nice accurate version of Freddy , Michael & Jason.I personally try not to have too much of the same characters in my collection & try not to focus too much on one movie in particular.I really like it when an artist does an oddball character like the Wishmaster , Big Ben, Leprechaun or something you just don't see everyday. It really keeps the hobby fresh & interesting. <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"\" border=\"0\" alt=\"thumbsup.gif\" /> The Big Bore...uhh...the Big Four - gummi - 09-17-2009 I like the big four, but like you I've grown tired of seeing them over and over again. I still enjoy all of the ones that I have, but I really don't see me adding anymore any time soon. There are just so many fantastic pieces out there to focus solely on masks based on these four characters. I guess it all boils down to individual tastes. I'd love to see some more masks from Nightbreed. That movie is somewhat of an untapped mask making resource. The Big Bore...uhh...the Big Four - frosty - 09-17-2009 As a mask maker i've done my fair share of freds and jasons, i got tired of doing the same thing over and over, theres been a few really nice sculpts come and go over the years, and theres allways someone looking for that new killer fred or jason.I am sculpting a few projects at the moment, MJ thriller zombie and wolf, a new pennywise sculpt, i like doing stuff that hasn't been done that many times before, like my Ben gardner bust from Jaws, didn't sell many of them, but i have one for myself.i don't mind doing more obscure stuff, keeps it interesting The Big Bore...uhh...the Big Four - The Death Curse - 09-17-2009 Don't look at me...I've been sculpting a life-size bust version of Michael Crawford as "The Phantom of the Opera" for the past few months! <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /> Honestly though, I don't mind collecting anything that I truly enjoy for however long that it continues to be available to me in some form. The only topic I've gotten sick of lately is anything to do with "Myers masks"...Guh, the very subject makes me wanna hurl...Plus, there have been hundreds of fan-sculpted replicas, but only a handful of TRULY accurate ones for each "Big 4" character so far. That's another reason why I've been limiting myself to movie-molded or original production pieces over the past year or two. It's just more satisfying for me (sometimes) to have a casting of the original sculpture that initially inspired my fascination. That type of replica doesn't leave anything to be desired about any particular character, unless you have to get the casting painted/repainted and haired/rehaired, which is a quick fix. If a production casting or movie-molded version of something is perpetually unavailable, THEN I'll consider fan sculpture as my only real option, and start looking around for what I believe to be the best fan-sculpted replica of the design. It keeps things more interesting for me.Cheers,Ryan The Big Bore...uhh...the Big Four - Chainsaw - 09-17-2009 <!--quoteo(post=330306:date=Sep 17 2009, 01:02 AM:name=stretchbaldy)<div class=\'quotetop\'>QUOTE (stretchbaldy @ Sep 17 2009, 01:02 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
<div class=\'quotemain\'><!--quotecI'm not sure I get this comment. Unless you’ve taken my money and not delivered on your end of a deal, then I don’t get upset over latex heads. You’re correct…. collecting Jordu pieces has nothing to do with any comments; your statement simply didn’t offer any explanation. I can see where Larry is coming from as he collects a wide range of characters. From his point of view, if mask makers do not continue to produce new and different pieces, the ‘selection well’ runs dry. I just couldn’t understand your comment if that was your angle. However, if you’re speaking from purely a ‘window shoppers’ point of view, then I can understand and completely agree. For me it’s the same as the abundance of Frankenstein pieces released even this year. I know there are many films on which to base a mask/bust but it seems like overkill lately. As we all seem to agree, there are so many deserving characters that should be given life or resurrected again. No harm, no foul <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"\" border=\"0\" alt=\"thumbsup.gif\" /> The Big Bore...uhh...the Big Four - Deadguy71 - 09-17-2009 <!--quoteo(post=330242:date=Sep 16 2009, 06:51 PM:name=knewby)<div class=\'quotetop\'>QUOTE (knewby @ Sep 16 2009, 06:51 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
<div class=\'quotemain\'><!--quotecNow please don't get me wrong, I love Jason, Freddy, Michael and Bubba as much as anyone. I'm just getting bored with the umpteenth versions of each. There are literally dozens and dozens of great movie characters who've never gotten the latex treatment, or got a really limited run and deserve a second chance. Anyone else agree? I like to keep a wide variety of masks/busts. I'd love to see more obscure characters done. I realize the $$$ is with those big guys, but throw us a bone every now and then.............................Larry<!--QuoteEnd
<!--QuoteEEndI've always kind of assumed that mask makers are selecting what they want to make based on their own personal interests, thereby driving the "big 4" because by definition, they are the most popular to the Mask makers as well.I think the money follows that, rather than drives that, although I guess it's possibly up which mask maker is being referred to.I'm a fan of horror, and my strongest interest is Jason. If I were a mask maker, I'd assume that'd be the direction my masks would go because it's where my muse would be. I also assume that if I randomly picked something from a list of things I didn't particularly care about, it would likely show in the end result, wouldn't it..? Worse, it'd take a hobby and turns it into a distasteful job.I'm not making masks, so it's just an assumption that it's similar to other marketable hobbies... but that's what makes sense to me. I think we are on the same page...and I totally agree about the Frank pieces.....same thing as the big four. How many in the last few months alone? I understand searching for perfection but man.... thats alot of Franks.... One of the reasons I love Jordu's work so much is the wide variety of subjects that he covers..all in his style ofcourse. It never gets old to me. When a majority of the new stuff that I see on these and other boards are Franks and Jasons.....well it gets old. That is all I was trying to say. I still appreciate the time and effort that goes into making these but just wish we would see more obscure characters and definitely more original stuff. The Big Bore...uhh...the Big Four - Homicidal#9 - 09-17-2009 to quote the great NEON deon sanders......MUST BE THE MONEY!!!Seriously though...I gave up on the big four a few years back and went to collecting what I like. I tend to steer towards more original characters and lesser known characters now....and werewolves...let us not forget about werewolves...take care,Tommy The Big Bore...uhh...the Big Four - ullilein - 09-17-2009 I would love to see a good gremlin bust! |
