Computer Accesories Help - puckface - 05-13-2006
hey guys, just wanderin if I could get some info from one of you computer wiz\'s
I got a digital camcorder, and Im in a bit of a pickle...I have a DV cable for it so that I can transfer the video onto my computer, it works just fine and I can transfer the sound and video in a jiffy.... on my dad\'s computer that is

its basically the same thing as that cable there, but on my computer, the end of the cable that goes into the computer (the ubs lookin one) has nowhere to plug in
are there different cables I can get taht will plug in sumwhere else, or some sort of adapter type thinger?

Because of several difference, you cant buy a Firewire to USB adaptor. But you do have a couple of other options:
A dual Firewire/USB hub will plug into your USB port (if indeed you have one) and allow you to connect firewire devices.
or
Buy a PCI Firewire card.
I would recommend option one since they are not only easier to access without having to go to the back of your PC, they allow you to plug in more devices. Make sure you have a USB port on your PC first and confirm of it\'s USB 2.0 or not.
EDIT: You can identify whether your PC has Hi-Speed USB or not relatively easy. Open Device Manager and expand the Universal Serial Bus section. There should be an "Enhanced" USB host controller present.

Many manufacturers make them, you can google for "Dual Firewire/USB hub" to start with. I don\'t own one, so I cant reccommend one personally. OR simply go to Best Buy and ask for one

I myself work in Computer Sales/Tech. For me, the cheapest way would be purchasing a firewire PCI card. But seeing as you might not know how to install it, the hub should work fine. Although a dual usb/1394a (firewire) hub may be a tad expensive. Also, Firewire2 (1394b) has recently been released and has a transfer rate of 800Mbps. That is double the speed of USB2.0. But yeah, firewire is always the way to go when transferring video.

If indeed you are comfortable installing the PCI card, it would not only be less expensive, you wouldn\'t be creating a botteneck by piping data at high rates through a slow link (USB 2.0 is 480Mbps). If you\'re running Windows XP, the installation should be real easy. But, you would stil be accessing the back of your PC to get to the ports. If you go that route, consider getting a Firewire extension cord to keep your connection in a conveinient location, unless you plan to keep the camera cable plugged into your PC most of the time.

yea, my computer was custom built by a computer place here in town called Computer Rennisance
what I thikn I may do is see if its cool with my dad if I just use his "IEEE firewire connection" card
I got a friend who knows a LOT about computers, so if I got him to come over, could we jsut take the card from my dad\'s comp and transfer it to mine?

I worship my own computer,no ones allowed near it.But things are no doubt different for you.Why not check out firewire cards on Ebay?You might get one for a cinch,then your pal can do the upgrade without performing surgery on your Dads PC :nuke: Good luck with it then :thumbsup:
