Latex Question - Darth Veach - 09-03-2006
A while back I spoke to someone on the forums who made a great PT7 J-Man costume and I can\'t remember who it was. But I printed out a big email he sent me on tips for my costume. Now that I am finally getting around to it I was wondering about latex.
His technique involved brushing layers of latex onto sections of a shirt that would go underneath the costume shirt so it looked like rotting skin. My question is, are there differences in latex? My local art store has a jar of latex (pink in color) and I was wondering if that was the right stuff. I just want something that will bond with the fabric and that I can build up in the same way to look like rotten skin.
Also I have heard of people painting the latex after it is dry by mixing a thin amount of latex with acrylic paint. Will this work? Any tips will be greatly appreciated. I have started on other parts of the costume, but I had wondered about latex and thought I\'d ask.

Mixing paints with the latex will work fine! There are differnt types of latex. Most art stores sell some kind of modeling latex. It will work fine with what you are gonna do with it i believe. You can also add paper towels and tissue paper to the latex to give it a ruff look, such as a wound or something. Id still test some of this latex on some fabric to see how well it adheres.

Oh yeah, now I remember he also suggested the tissue paper thing. Was that you by chance? This guy did a great job using the latex and pieces from an inexpensive zombie costume (has rotten flesh and exposed bones) which I found 2 years ago on clearance for like $9. I know he was a member on the boards, but I can\'t remember who it was.
I just looked on Monster Makers Monster Shop site. Is their Mask latex what I would want? A quart of that is only $11. I tried also looking for Perma-Wet and I can\'t find it. Anyone know if they still make it?
I assume after I use a brush to apply it to my clothes, the brush is pretty much done for?

Sounds liek you are ont he right track man, another thing you can do to really get some nice textures and shapes is take cotton balls and dip them latex, the shape the in the form you want, great for making wound sand torn skin. Give it a shot man, you cna do soem relaly neat stuff with that. I use that mod alot to upgrade masks of mine.

Nope wasnt me.. but ive did the same thing with my vs costume.. just not as estensive. The brush will be ruined..the mask latex is great for this.. but i still think that the dipping latex you find at art stores will work as good. Some people use that latex to make masks..go figure..lol.

If you want your brushes to last longer you should squeeze some detergent into the brush, this will make it not clog up so much and will be good for another use after rinsing it out.
Cotton wool is also good for making shapes, you can get some nice textures by using this and tissue paper with the latex
