Help me rip up my costume - ColdEthyl - 03-11-2004

I was wondering if anybody had any tips on how to get really good looking holes and tears into my jason suit like in part 7 with the wear and tear look, dirty and all.
And please dont say get an exacto blade cause thats just ugly and cheap lookn.
Any tips?

To get the dirty look, get some black & brown acrylic paint....I recommend adding a little water to it to thin it a little. I used my fingers to smear it and rub it in the clothing. For tears, i make a small cut with sharp scissors and just tear it the rest of the way with my hands.

The best way that I added holes to our custom was by cutting a little hole then ripping it open, you van cut a long strip then rip it downwards, it is sort of trial & error, if you are a little nervous & don\'t want to ruin your Jacket, try on an old shirt or something. We then airbrush the age onto the jacket & clothing & frey the edges of the rips to give it a better look. You can buy paints that will adhere to clothing that won\'t was off or you can buy a mixture that you add t your paint to make it permanant on clothing. I hope this helps a little. Here is our costume from FVJ sort of the same concept as a part 7 costume.

The best and most realistic lookin method is hands down the Steak Knife!!!
It might take a little while to make the cuts and to fray the ends a bit, but it will be worth it believe me.
As far as the weathering goes, I recommend a layered paint approach with an acrylic wash in a spray bottle, again, it takes a while but it looks superior and more realistic compared to the just slap the paint on and make it dirty looking method. Hope this helps.

^^^ the steak knife and hand rip methods work good I also used sand paper to wear the edges and material down without making a hole then just wash it alot to get all the frays
