Jason: Kane Hodder Vs Derek Mears - Martoch - 06-16-2008
Hello Everyone.I was just wondering what you guys think of Derek Mears as the new "Jason"...I mean, none of us have seen him as "Jason", but so far his style differs a lot from Kane's. I remember reading about how Kane would not hang around the other actors/actresses and would show his "pissed off" side on the set. This resulted in the other actors/actresses being nervous around him and actually being more afraid of "Jason" when it came time to shoot the film.This is what I read about Derek, quoted by Amanda Righetti (who plays terrorized teen Whitney):"Watching Jason Voorhees in all his warped glory before me, shaking my hand and carrying on with pleasantries, was simply surreal. Mears was an extremely kind and focused man, who everyone on set seemed to admire."What do you guys think? Do you think the other actors/actresses will be as afraid of Mears as they were of Hodder on the set? I agree that Kane IS "Jason" 100% as he is my absolute favorite! The last time Kane suited up as Jason was nearly 10 years ago. I still do not see the fascination with Kane's portrayal after part 7. He was one of many. Just like Derek Mears, Richard Brooker, Ted White, etc. I was really hoping the Hodder thing wouldn't come back into play here. Kane will probably never be Jason again. And to me Ted White was a lot more pissed off acting than Kane. As nice a guy as Kane is, he didn't create nor define the character. He made it HIS own . . . not everybody's.I do see your point about interacting with the other actors, even White stayed away from them. But they are actors and get paid to act and honestly you can't really tell the difference in them being really scared or acting in the final product.

Honestly, I don't see it in Kane either... I mean he was A JASON, but honestly, he had the most beat to shit rotted looks and was in the worst story plots. Why does everyone love his acting so much? I think it's because, to make up for the shitty movies, you concentrate strictly on Jason, therefore making the movie seem good. The earlier films (parts 1-6) were great, story wise, hell acting wasn't horrible, and the FX was great. Every Jason played it there own version.Kane is just a robotic figure who pumps his chest and walks slow yet appears infront of you within seconds.You know who showed some real great acting additude? Ari Leman? Steve Dash? Ted White? Hell, even Warington Gillet was pissed off lookin at the end of part 2. What I love the most about Brookers performance is he was a more demented, psychotic and happy killer. You could see he enjoyed what he was doing. With Kane... well.... what's the point? If the story isn't convincing, why is the killer?Most of the time, your too busy concentrating on the make up and masks that you don't realize the acting isn't so great either. But then again, when the hell was the acting ever supposed to be good in these films?

Kane had his moment in the sun with Jason in a couple of Fridays and now has Hatchet to play with.Derek Mears has a great look and should be great as Jason.

I think that every man who has played Jason so far has brought something special to their portrayal... Kane had intensity, and I liked his head movements. But he isn't the end all Jason in my mind either. They all have bits I like. I'm very interested to see where Derek takes us in his portrayal and what HIS Jason is like.
