Were Are The Masks These Days? - scream4me - 06-26-2009 Is it just me or is the mask maker population dying off. Ive been collecting for 5 years approx and when i started there was tones of mask and makers to buy from, from all the jason films myers etc wich is most common to buy with most intrest in those fims. you could look on ebay or forums and see 4-5 different part 4 jasons to choose from from different artists.but i find in the last year or so its getting very boring and and to find more masks. I usually buy quite abit and when another yet better mask comes out i buy it and replace it with one i have of the same film, to keep it fresh and interesting.Mabey times are to hard for artists mabey theres lack of intrest to keep artists makeing masks so theres not much to choose from anymore.I'm at the point when some things in my collection are going to be sold as i have been doing just because ive had them for some time and getting kind of board of the same look of them. so hopefully some artists out the can bring the spark back, it would be nice to see all the artist give a take on something and really try to better the mask world and keep it interesting before it totaly dies and people have no intrest and move on.anyway this isnt a (what my mommy called my daddy whenever he was late on the child support) and complain thread, i'm just hoping for a another spark of intrest before i sell everything.i find the only time it gets exciting is when a new film comes out, then everyone jumps at the chance to make that mask, then when the hype is over so are the masks again. theres no costant flow anymore.I guess everthing been done to death mabey.mabey its just me! Were Are The Masks These Days? - WHiTE_SiDER - 06-26-2009 Hey dave i feel the same about it Were Are The Masks These Days? - imperialhockmaster - 06-26-2009 I dont think anyone really lost interest, but times are very hard, i went from making 45-65,000 for yrs to nothing overnite, its affected how much i can do as an artist, i want to do some pieces, some original and some of my own take on our favorite slashers, but the money just isnt there to spend on it like i used to have, i do plan on doing at least two pieces before summer is over though, one is an original in wich to my knowledge hasnt been done yet, and the other will be SIKE!! HAA, ok ill give ya a hint, itll be a slasher!!! And i do agree with you man, i miss the many diffrent choices and takes on all our fav killers and monsters, im sure it will come back bigger and better as soon as this darn recession lets up!! Were Are The Masks These Days? - Mutilated - 06-26-2009 I agree, when I joined NIGHTOWL back in 2003 the mask scene was popping with masks galore. Then again, this was around the time FVJ came out and the TCM Remake and everything. Most of the big name makers back then, disappeared. Were Are The Masks These Days? - jonl - 06-26-2009 not much out there that i am very interested in lately ether, there are only a few artists that i really like and they haven't been coming out with much for a while now. Were Are The Masks These Days? - clownnation - 06-26-2009 I got a feeling that its going to spin back up... Cons are getting bigger (Conventions are joining forces ) then you have all the remake horror films coming out, so over the next year or two i think we will see alot of new guys and maybe some old names coming back to the hobby. This field is demand driven and with horror films being out of the limelight for a bit and the down economy, i think we hit a low, but it will rebound. Were Are The Masks These Days? - frosty - 06-26-2009 Well i'm still around, bad health has kept me from sculpting, but i do have a couple of projects on the bench, a Steve wang concept predator wolf sculpt, allways prefered that design, so thats more of a personal project.I'm also doing mean machine from the Dredd movie.I like to do stuff that hasn't really been done before, i got really burned out doing Freddy stuff, but i'm redoing the baby and the new makeup when we eventually get to see it.Moneys tight for a lot of people i guess, takes a lot of outlay to make this stuff, i suppose people are frightened of being stuck with something that won't shift.I've allways noticed Justin comes out with new and interesting sculpts, him and a few others keep the hobby alive Were Are The Masks These Days? - howlingwind13 - 06-26-2009 "everythings been done to death" ... Start collecting original pieces. Justin's Yeti, or something non-slasher... I agree, the slasher have been done to death, and I got tired of collecting them just to have a better version come out next year. My future focus is on original pieces, maybe some Casey Love stuff, or Jordu. Were Are The Masks These Days? - Chainsaw - 06-27-2009 Hey Dave.I can somewhat see where you're coming from, but I wouldn't really say there are less makers around now than there was just four years ago when I started collecting. Sure some makers have left the scene for one reason or another. Perhaps they are like collectors... some burn out, some take people's money and run. But I think several new artists have popped up since then and are able to make a nice contribution to the hobby. Perhaps the slasher aspect is limiting the perception as there seems to be more and more original makers emerging.I started collecting slashers and will continue to do so to some degree. For what seemed like the longest time I focused on completing my F13 and Halloween collection. When they were finished I was able to branch out into other horror franchises. With pieces like my Tallman, Lost Boys David, KNB Airport Zombie, etc I was able to discover a different side of collecting and I think it lends itself to more options. I am not into collecting original pieces… yet... as I am more into horror movie character replicas, but I feel there is still so much more that can be done. There are several characters that have been done in the past, that were limited or released before I joined the community, that I would love to acquire. Perhaps something to look at is group commissions… something similar to what Rich did with his’ U-FUQ’ and ‘Dead is Better’ pieces. Come up with an idea, approach an artist and discuss initial details and then gauge the interest from other collectors. I think that would be worth a shot <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"\" border=\"0\" alt=\"thumbsup.gif\" /> Were Are The Masks These Days? - monteburns - 06-27-2009 My opinion on this is that there is just way too much of the same stuff out there. There is really no need for 20 different variations of the same makeup of a certain character.Ebay is flooded with multiple versions of Freddy, Jason, Myers & Leatherface so much so that the prices have been driven way down.Only a handful of diehard collectors are willing to keep on upgrading every time a new artist puts up a highend piece for $300 to $500. |
