Mucinex should help if your chest is filled up and making you cough. Mucinex works to help thin out the mucus and make it easier to cough up which will take stress off your chest. If you actually have asthma, a chest cold can worsen symptoms of asthma... at least it does for me. Sounds like you could still benefit from an asthma inhaler like Ventolin or Symbicort though.

I've had severe asthma for years now. Since I was about 5 or 6 years old. I've spent a few Christmases and birthdays in the ER as a child. The doctors would say due to over-excitement, I caused myself to have asthma attacks. I've even had to spend weeks at a time in the hospital when I was younger. School was a bit tough do to my frequent absences.

A couple years ago, I had to have chest surgery for my asthma. The doctors said that my ribcage may have been pressing against my lungs a bit and it could help. A couple years later, I honestly don't feel much of a difference unfortunately. Most asthma patients use their rescue inhaler once or twice a month, I use mine frequently throughout the day. I've been trying advair and singulair, but it just doesn't seem to work.

It's a bit depressing sometimes. I played baseball for nearly 10 years until I was simply unable to continue to do my asthma. But I suppose if it were not for that prevention, I may not be into a lot of the hobbies I am today. So I look at it as a blessing in disguise.

Also, if you are having breathing problems at the moment and are unsure why, asthmatics often have tough times with their condition between season changes. Typically in the middle of winter and dead of summer are the worst.

But to answer your question. Like Jason said, Mucinex is usually just for cleansing out the mucus from your nasal areas. It also helps to break up some of the congestion in your chest. But I won't necessarily help your breathing, specifically.

You should probably contact your doctor about possibly getting an inhaler. Abuterol was the most common inhaler until it was discontinued a year or so back. Since then, I've been on pro-air.

Thanks for the replys. I have had asthma sense i was 9(diagnosed). I hear ya Puckface, it can be very depressing. I have been on Advair for several years and it has helped me so much to where i dont have to take my rescue inhailor. But whats strange is, when i take that now , it doesnt seem to help as much as it did back in the day before advair. The worst for me right now is when i try to sleep, it really makes you think you are goona die. And sad but true im up drinking rum n coke because at leat i will just pass out.

I understand, man. I will go through long periods of time where I will take the Advair, but I'm so stubborn that if I don't see changes within a certain period of time, I get kind of sidetracked and stop taking it. I suppose it's my own fault.

I'm actually taking it at the moment, and have been for a few months now. Maybe by summer I will be able to fully tell a difference. Only time will tell, I suppose.

Yep! When i first started taking the advair, i was so sure it wasnt working. I had to get use to not taking my rescue inhailor all the time as well, it sucked! But now im glad i do not rely on the rescue anymore. I hope we all feel better.
See yall later,
