Have you tried using sandpaper?

i take them out in my yard on the driveway with work boots on and stomp them and drag them across the driveway and into the dirt for about half an hour (your neighbors will think you are nuts), soak them in hot coffee grounds and water for a day then, sandpaper the areas that i missed, then wash them with very little detergent. weathering takes some work if you really want a worn look.

I use an exacto knife for fraying. I drag the blade sideways instead of with the sharp side, or you'll cut strait through. I also LIGHTLY mist spray paints and rubbing red acrylic paint by fingers deep into the fabric can give you a nice blood look.

Here's two examples, these do look a little better in person:

Hope this helped, good luck!

I use a steak knife with a serrated edge. I use it sideways as well, you don't want straight cuts. You want the jagged edge to begin to fray open a hole by repeatedly dragging it over the area. Then asMPN212 said, use acrylics for staining and weathering. Always start light, you can always add more to your liking.

Yep, use it to rough up the edges. Drag the serrated edge across it until it begins to fray.
