Mask Sculpters - Darth Veach - 07-11-2011 I have always wanted to try my hand at sculpting a mask and a local art store is clearing out Klean Klay for pennies on the dollar, so i can get a ton of it for next to nothing. What head armature do you like to use? Do you guys make your own? I am considering the one from Monster Makers right now. Any help is appreciated! Mask Sculpters - IbDaToNeGuY - 07-11-2011 You can pick up some foam heads at Hobby Lobby for around $10 Mask Sculpters - msharrow - 07-11-2011 monster makers armature, i cut off the ears and nose before i start. i always seem to sculpt until i hit those areas. mike Mask Sculpters - Darth Veach - 07-11-2011 I figured the Monster Makers one would be the best one to buy. And if I recall, my sculpt should be about 10% larger than the planned mask since latex shrinks? Does that sound correct? I was just thinking about the foam head as since it's your first sculpt and not sure if you'll be happy and wanna stick to it , well at the least you didn't put too much into the project and aren't stuck with an armature whereas the foam head you can just toss out . Mask Sculpters - the green ghoul - 07-12-2011 The MM head works best if the head is cut off and raised almost an inch so the shoulders don't ride high once cast down. Like mike said slice off nose and ears. I also take a torch to the cut parts to cauterize the foam to keep it from getting those gritty bits in my clay. I was given that tip by someone else years ago and forgot it! I assume I could use some foam from a high density floor mat for that. Thanks for the help guys! |
