hey everyone, i just wanna say thanks in advance for any advice given to me from here on out,,,so here goes:
I have been told by a few people,, that when making a mold plaster-a-paris will work just as good as Ultra-Cal. The only difference i know of, is that ultracal is harder, and wont break as easily.
Also, can somebody gimme detailed instructions on whut to do, and times to do,,starting with pouring latex into the mold,,pouring excess out, letting it CURE,, all that. I need amounts of times to leave it in please(as in 15 minutes/8 hours,whutever).
um and any other advice yall wanna gimme as far as the latex casting part, i know a good bit about molding, so yea.

after your mold is done its a smooth ride from there. when you have joined your mold together, pour your latex in, i usually give it a good hour to simmer, its turns out a great thikness for me. when its all dryed , pull her out and see how she goes
and yes, plaster of paris is good, but i use industrial plaster, works a treat

thanks guys, but i may need a few things re-explained:
i have a one peice mold(full head) so how do i go about the first coat of latex?
Also, i only have gallon jugs of latex, so whuts the easiest way to pour the latex back in? I was thinking just going and buying a plastic funnel. also, whut do i do if i get the "skin" forming on top on the latex as it sets in the mold.

the reason im getting all this advice, is i have a mold on the way, and it will be here friday. I have some latex and all here, so ima pour a few up, and sell some blanks at a very cheap price, since i need to get some money up kinda fast. Im not gonna say whut the mask is yet, but ill take pics friday or saturday when i pull the first copy from the mold.

i have no clue what some of these guys are talking bout..but plaseter of paris is crap and dwellign for a hour is not needed. i pour a mold and right back out,then either use air or water to pop bubbles then i pour more back in and dump and let drain for 10 minutes then pour again and right back out i get a good thickness.. the longer dwell can casue more shrinkage in the piece..My advice if your molding a sculpted use ultracal and if ur makign a mold on a master then use hydrocal or recently i have used #1 pottery plaster

Plaster of paris works fine for molds, it\'s less dense and it will absorb the water from the latex faster hence it\'ll take less drying time. The time you let it dwell depends alot of the grade of latex you\'re using. The main problem with plaster of paris is the mold will degrade quicker than ultracal, but if you\'re using it to make production molds from a master it doesn\'t really matter and the price difference and availability of plaster of paris more than makes up for it.

another question, is it nessary to do more than 1 layer of latex in the mold? Liek,,do you have to pour it in,,pour it out,,,repeat...
