Dry Ice - jf5550 - 09-18-2005

I decided I\'m going to try to have a real cool Halloween party at home. I go to a religious based University and we aren\'t allowed to drink/smoke/sex or anything on campus, and they aren\'t too big on Halloween either, so I\'m inviting closest friends to my house for a get-together. I want it to be a cheesy/all-out evening, with black lights, old horror films playing in the background, cheesy Halloween music playing, and everyone dressing up.

One big thing I wanted to do was make lots of Halloween finger foods, things like cookies that look like bones, eyeballs, insects, etc...I also wanted to make a cauldron full of some punch concoction. I wanted to have it like a witches\' cauldron and have smoke rising from it at all times pretty much (for which I\'ll probably use dry ice) and I\'m wondering - Is it safe to drink the punch if the dry ice is just dropped into the punch itself? Or does it need to be not touching the drink?

Sorry, long way around a short question Smile

Dry ice is made under different conditions than normal ice which means there could be chemical contamination if you mix it with what your drinking. Technically you should be ok by mixing it with your drink, but dry ice really isn\'t made to be put in food, it\'s made in a lab around other chemicals so there may be some risks involved.

Your best bet would be to place your bowl of punch in another bowl that has water and dry ice in it. In order for it to produce the \"smoke\" it needs to be agitated failry often, otherwise it won\'t do too much. Also, remember that dry ice is solid carbon monoxide, so when it sublimes into it\'s gaseous state it is carbon monoxide gas...meaning you should use it in a well ventilated area.

Maybe you should just get a fog machine and be on the safe side.

Thank you, that is exactly what I needed to hear. I appreciate it. Also, are you the guy who runs Fright-Rags? Justin told me to email you about making a shirt like his black pocket-T with the NIGHTOWL logo ironed on. He said it would be okay with him and I was wondering if you could make me one? Please let me know - jf5550@arbor.edu

my suggestion, get a big bolw for the punch, and have a seperate tall skinny bowl in the middle for the dry ice. Im pretty sure that the dry ice is dangerous, i know if it touches your skin in burns the hell outa you,

maybe even take a 2 liter bottle and cut off the top section, and that would work.

Dry Ice - jf5550 - 09-18-2005

Yeah, that totally makes much better sense than risking it Smile

I like that idea, it seems much safer, but how does it work? Does it go into the actual bowl or what?

Dry Ice - Jason-V - 09-19-2005

It goes in water.. i still wouldnt put it the drink.. i would hide a bowl of water in the pot and put it in there...
