i asked frosty this, he said if u use plastilene clay its like chewing gum and wont harden on ya, but on monster makers.net it just says oil based clay, if i start to sculpture something with that clay will it harden on me or will i have to cover it up after i work a little on it?

plastelina is oil based clay so it won\'t harden. It will be hard at first but heat get er going.

I think oil based clay is good to start with, its not quite as easy but it allows you to spend much more time on it.

also depends on the hardness you get. it comes 1-4. 1 being the softest and 4 being the hardest. 2 i think is ideal for portrait head busts. Question for those who have been using this clay longer. Don\'t you use mineral oil to smooth the sculpture as you would do with water for a water based clay?

Oil based clay sucks ass, it\'s a pain to work with. I\'d ask if you could substitute for Wed.

monster makers is oil based
it will soften when heated
it will harden when cold
but it won\'t dry out or grow mushrooms
perfect starter clay
although roma plastilina is easier to work with than monster makers IMO
Roma vs MM is personal preference
wed vs oil based is also personal preference

go for the Roma #2, it gets easier to work with over time the more you mess with it...IMO the MM oil clay is too hard, and you don\'t really need to start out with WED clay since it dries out and really isn\'t designed for beginners...get you some ROMA #2 and an armature, and maybe a tool kit then just sculpture for a while and see what you come up with...also some instructional videos or books wouldn\'t hurt.

I would always suggest a water based clay to start with, its easier to block things out,but just take it easy and put the clay on slowly and you will be ok.

If your starting out and haven\'t done much sculpting I\'d use the Roma caly. It won\'t dry out on you. I use both number 2 and 3 when I make masks. Your best bet is to buy some blocks of different clay at the art store and see what your most comfortable using. Get a block of roma 2 and 3 and some water based clay. Then when you figure out what you like to work with buy enough to start a mask.

once again it is personal preference
I would get the monster makers clay that comes with the kit
(you are buying a kit that comes with monster makers clay right?)

then when you start your next project
buy roma..or if you feel it suits you...wed

I THINK that monster makers is great for beginners and practice
plus when you switch to roma#2 or wed after using MM it will make it that much better!! If you go directly to wed you may never know what the difference is.
