Sculpting & Casting Question

Hey guys, I see that alot of you older, and wiser sculptors tend to use soft clay to sculpt a bust and then cast from that. A good example is the new Remake from bob @ Mmfx and from what I have seen Jon fuller always uses soft clay as well. my question is: how is it possible to make a good cast using soft clay since soft clay doesn't keep its shape very well and wouldnt the soft clay warp when you lay it down to cast, any help would be very much appreciated, thanks. I sculpted an ear from water based clay, I had to bet a spread on silicone mold kit to make a mold.

Hey Jamie,I've been told to spray polyurethane on the soft clay to make it hard. I have a sculpt that I need to mold and will be the method I'll be attempting as I used a soft oil based clay. Hope that helps!

It is bascily a product used to add a protective coat to furniture (wood based). My parents use to use it to preserve flowers.

You can give it a couple clear coat, then dull coat, sprays. It won't last long enough, but will be long enough for molding.You can always mold the back of the head first, you don't have to face it down anyways. You "mold" your sculpture to produce a negative shell, you pour latex in to create your positive "casting" of the mask. <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":thumbsup:\" border=\"0\" alt=\"thumbsup.gif\" />
