I was wondering, when making a two piece mold of something with high off center protrusions, lets say for example something with high narrow horns like this:

http://www.deathstudios.com/green_hellion_..._demon_mask.htm

....when separating the mold, I\'m assuming the protrusion will essentailly break off in the mold during seperation and need to be dug out with care to avoid damaging the mold. This seems like it would also make it considerably more difficult to separate the sculpture from the mold as well if you have more of these protrusions. I wasn\'t sure how easily protrusions in the sculpture would \'give\' under these conditions once the clay has dried (using something such as WED for example). Any info would be appreciated.

One thing to think of is a LIGHT coat of Krylon Crystal Clear over your sculpture helps in the demolding process....
Not to mention, when using WED clay....don\'t let it dry out.....try and keep it as moist as you can for easy clean up. When cleaning the mold, use a wooden tool to "hollow-out" the sculpture\'s horns.
After that, it should be pretty easy to "peel" out the rest of the clay.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. About how long can you drag out a large sculpture using WED before molding?

Keep it wrapped in plastic, give the sculpture a couple light mists when you\'re done for the day and wrap up the sculpture airtight. I use a garbage bag, when I\'m done sculpting I get out as much air as I can and tie off the top of the bag. Next day when I open the bag it\'s all humid and moist, so it must be working. I\'ve only had one WED sculpture dry out. I didn\'t tie the bag well enough, took about 6 weeks off from the sculpture, came back to it and her head had cracked through in about 4 places.

One crack ran across the eyes which was actually kinda gnarly looking.

Hope it helps man, good luck.

Hey Guys,

Well, I finished my sculpture and have a couple more questions. I would really appreciate any help, this being my first sculpture, I\'d like to get a good mold from it.

I added a couple of light coats of crystal clear in preparation for molding, but I have to take off for the night. I let the crystal clear dry and put a garbage bag loosely over the sculpture and tied it up. Is it going to be a problem if I don\'t mold it until the morning?

Also, I used up most of my Wed clay and don\'t think I have enough for the entire dividing wall (50lbs of that stuff went fast). Can I use something else, like play dough, to fill in the gap?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I think you can use anything water based for the dividing wall. I personally don\'t think it would be a problem to wait until tomorrow to mold it. Good luck!!

You can get moisty pottery clay at Hobby Lobby, works great.

Before you add any stone, I suggest a light coat of dulling spray, it\'ll help the stone stay in place and not bead up on ya.

I\'m just saying if he sculpted in WED, he doesn\'t want to use WED for a dividing wall, he wants oil. So the 2 clays don\'t mix. Makes it alot easier to take the wall down, touch the sculpture up if it needs it, and make the 2nd part of the mold.
