The best method I have found for fraying is to use a knife to make the holes, then use a wire brush to tease them out. It frays them up real good. I use sponge brushes and various acrylics. I never use any type of food or spray paint, as the clothes will stink usually. Acrylic paint has virtually no smell after it is dried, and is "clean" weathering that will last for a long time. Also I use mod podge to seal in wet areas and blood wounds.

Nah, the smell goes away after a while.Acrylics are great, but for some effects spray paint is invaluable.to each his own i guess.lol

I used spray paint for many other uses, but not on clothes. Buy it has always had a bad odor for quite awhile. But I can't use it anyway living in an apartment complex, as I have no place to use it. No porch no yard. So I make the best out of acrylics. I also wear undershirts so that my actual costumes never get sweaty and need washing. But living in PA it you don't have to worry about too much sweating, except inside the mask. So I make plenty of ventilation holes if possible. The armpits also have ventilation holes as part of the weathering, so that helps a lot.I know some people who tried to use actual dirt, mud, and grass for weathering and said it stuck and attracted bugs lol. I would never use that, as even in the movies they do not use real dirt. I think I did it once as a kid because I thought it was real back then.
