NECA HalloweeN Box Set review
So we’re clear, this is the set with Michael Myers, and Dr. Loomis, includes a pretty massive display base aswell. Pretty sought after set by collectors to say the least! Another attempt at Myers to compete with the midget crap version McF Toys did, and his counterpart, Dr. Sam Loomis. All we need now is Laurie!
Packaging 8/10
Pretty nice display, shows the figures well, and some of the base. Would work for MOC display if you’re one of those. Good sturdy box, and everything is tied down nicely to prevent any warping. Why only 8 then? If you didn’t have a twistie phobia before, you do after opening this set. It’s damn well twistie hell!! Took me a good 20 minutes to get through em all, and that was with wire snips!
Sculpting
Myers: 7.5/10
A pretty good effort here, you know exactly who it is without a second glance. His body is very nicely done, the coveralls hang naturally and are detailed with texture and wrinkles. Pretty good, typical Myers pose, feet shoulder width apart standing straight up. Feet are great (although not the proper olive drab jungle boots) the shoes are nicely detailed and most importantly, let him stand pretty well on the base or alone. The hands are good, both done very well, with the right able to hold his knife, and the left partially opened. Now, the mask, the point that will make or break Myers. Man did they come close, but not all the way. To a casual fan it’ll be perfect, but to those of us who have shelled out for a NMM78, Nemesis, or Psycho, it falls quite a bit short. Kind of has a slight Nick Castle look, but I doubt that was on purpose. The forehead detail is played up just too much, and it kind of has an odd look from the front overall. Side profile looks fantastic though! The hair isn’t bad, little flat maybe, mini mullet kind of. But, this is being pretty picky, all in all, it is a pretty damn good figure
Loomis: 10/10
Holy crap! Did someone say Donald Pleasence? This figure is amazing, in likeness, size, stance, the whole shebang! From the kind of odd slim chested but husky body, to the way he’s standing, they got him down to a T, or D maybe. His suit is fully sculpted under the coat with some very nice detailing to it. The coat is soft plastic, and hangs really well. The feet are great, lets him stand very easily on his own. Right hand is great, holds the gun perfectly, the left hand is a touch odd though, not enough to drop any points, but just odd. His head sculpture is damn near perfect, all the wrinkles, the vein on the side of his head, it’s fantastic. Best part though, his expression is dead on, that kind of look of frightened concern, comes off very well! Top notch figure!
Base: 10/10
This is the nicest display base I have ever seen at this price range, and figure scale. NECA really went above and beyond here! The stairs and front are beautiful, and the ground sections are really something cool! It all interlocks together to form a pretty big setup that is really quite impressive. They’ve even added a few nice little extras, 6 leaves you can place where you like, a fallen tree branch, and a nice sign with HalloweeN on it. Works great with the figures too!
Paint
Myers: 9/10
Not a whole lot of paint application on Myers, most of him is coveralls, and they were cast in blue plastic. But they do have a very nice wash on them for weathering, and to bring out the detail. Should have been green of course, I know this will bug some fans. (me included) The skin tones of the hands, neck and eyes are all pretty good, maybe a little red on his neck, but nothing major. The mask, again, defining point, and again, not quite 100% It’s pretty basic, looks like maybe dark gray undercoat, then bright white dry brushing overtop, not bad at all, but not what we’d hope for. Needs a little more weathering, and a little skin tone showing through. But again, that’s something only the crazy fans will pick up on. No slop, or over painting anywhere on mine, which is very nice! There is however one small dot of missed paint on the tip of the nose. (I’ll fix that up later though) Other then that small thing though, very nice work!
Loomis: 9.5/10
Loomis has a little more involved paint job, The suit underneath was a nice light wash, and some good dry brushing to it, same with the trench coat. His skin tones are pretty good all around too. The face is the stand out though, compliments the beautiful sculpture very nicely! Good tones and light shading. His eyes are most impressive, they have that Donald Pleasence look to them, if that makes sense. The hair and beard both are great, good combination of colors there. And again, no slop or missed parts I can see. Just hard to give a perfect score with paint.
Base: 9.5/10
Really impressive here, the colors are all vibrant and very natural looking! Good use of washes and dry brushing. The stairs have some good subtle weathering to them, look aged, without going overboard. Barely any slop and bleed over I can see, which is rare for this kind of thing!
Articulation
Myers: 8/10
9 points total, 2 ball jointed shoulders, 2 cut elbows, 2 cut wrists, 2 cut feet, and the neck. Pretty good for Myers, Don’t want a whole lot of extra joints that will just look ugly and throw off the flow of the coveralls. The ball jointed shoulders are a very nice touch here, gives him a couple more pose options which is always good! Only problem I can see is that you just can’t get him to hold the knife in a stabbing pose and have it look good, comes off looking awkward. I think a hinge elbow would have done the trick there, and why 2 points were dropped.
Loomis: 9/10
10 points total here, 2 ball jointed shoulders, 1 hinge elbow, 1 cut elbow, 1 ball jointed wrist, 1 cut wrist, 2 feet, 1 waist and a ball jointed neck. Damn nice! Allows a couple different poses, and nothing is wasted. Again, the ball joints are great to have here, lets him hold the gun much more natural and look more convincing, the hinge elbow also helps that a whole lot too. NECA was doing some thinking with Loomis and it shows!
Accessories 9.5/10
Not a ton to speak of, but all appropriate and very nice! Myers of course has his trade mark butcher knife, which is VERY well done, not just a plain knife, actually has something to it! Excellent detailing, although a lack of blood (was quickly resolved by me) Fits in his hand very well. Loomis’s revolver is damn nice too, very well sculpted, with pretty accurate detailing. Might be a touch too much weathering detail though in the paint. Fits great in his hand. There is also a nice little pumpkin that comes with everything, same design as the one in the movie, and is accurate down to the notch in the nose! Has a little feature of lighting up too. But, and here’s where it lost half a point, it only has a pressure switch, meaning you have to hold it down to make it work, which is kind of a pain in the ass. A toggle would have been MUCH better.
Value 10/10
I paid around $30 (CAN) for mine, which seems about the norm. For that price you’re really getting a helluva set! When you consider 1 figure is usually around $20 (CAN) this really is a steal! Not only are you getting 2 great figures, but one amazing display as well!
Overall 9/10
How can you not be impressed? Despite a few issues, mainly with Michaels mask, this is about the best box set I’ve come across! If you’re a HalloweeN fan you NEED this set period!
