I have a question for all of you guys that make any sort of profit selling anything on ebay. I dont know if this is a taboo subject to start a topic on so mods please feel free to delete this post. What I was wondering is: have any of you guys had the displeasure of being audited by revenue canada or the IRS because of your ebay account, and if so what happened ? My ex wife hacked into my ebay account and took all of my info to revenue canada. now apparently I will be forced to pay thousands of dollars in taxes because of my "unregistered buisness" and because I dont charge taxes on my items. My argument is that I have been collecting masks for years and just because all of the sudden I decide to sell them does not mean I have a buisness. Does anyone have any advice for me, thanks.

hey me too i am from canada bro in fact montreal quebec. annyways your ex sound kinda hard on you.if i where you i would just say that youve been collecting for years and sold a lot of your stuff lately and thats it. good luck

but it depends.if its for a child pension and you have just a small salary in an ordinary job but make a fortune selling mask well mabe she is right about all this so it depends i just dont know all the story.

i wouldnt worry about it, due to the fact you dont have a store on ebay, you just sell items randomly. you can claim your selling your collection.its those guys who sell large quantaties as a buisness on ebay there the ones should worry.

I can't speak about Canadian Law, as I am unfamiliar with it.....HOWEVER...in the U.S.?It doesn't matter if you consider yourself a private collector/seller or whatever. In theory, if you sell anything (yes, even at a garage sale) you are supposed to charge sales tax. This hasn't changed. It just is hardly enforced.Will the Canadian IRS press you? Who knows. What else do they have to do?But, YES, you are supposed to pay sales tax in any business transaction.

I am in finance and accounting, have a small business currently, and have started and sold others, here in the US, every penny needs to be reported whehter the sales are through ebay, paypal, forums, the garage, or the corner. Now, after you pass $600 in sales through your paypal account, that information is turned over to the government. If you do not claim the money, the chances of the government auditing without being alerted are slim, as under 1% of all returns are audited. But you could be, and they could request sales tax on your sales. Now, if you keep good records, you can counteract an taxes on prfits with your expenses (paint, latex, abs, hocs, masks, gas to drive to hardware store, etc) so it is very easy to avoid paying that tax, sales tax howerver if you get caught, you really have no recourse. Also, your state and local tax bureau may come looking for their end if the IRS catches on as well.

Unless you can proof the government otherwise chances are you have to pay and personally I wouldn't fool around in regards to this issue as there might be heavy fines etc. associated with evading these taxes. Secondly if your ex-wife used your ebay account unbeknownst to you and without your consent I would talk to my lawyer about that as well since that is a criminal offense.
