I was going to list an item on eBay and noticed that they have a " free shipping " option.I can't figure out why some sellers would be interested in offering free shipping on eBay especially on a larger item which would cost a small fortune to ship.I rarely sell on eBay anymore because it is already bad enough that you are fee'd to death.Any sellers here feel generous enough to offer free shipping?

I've offered it before. If you were a buyer and you were after something and out of the say 20 sellers who have the item for roughly the same price but only 1 has free shipping, who would you go to?

Its more of a marketing tool. its good for masks and light things that cost only $10 -$20 to ship. I offer free shipping on some of my auctions- I just include some shipping cost in the listing price!

I think there is 2 "Free Shipping" mode....The first one is simply marketing:you just have to say FREE SHIPPING and you might get more person to look at your stuff, but you just have to raise the price...if the thing cost normally 250$ + 20$ shipping... sell it at 270$ with the FREE SHIPPING mark.... more person will check the auction and eventually buy it!The second is pure generosity..... not exactly because you will not see something that is heavy for free shipping (or it will be the 1st free shipping...), but for small object that fit in an envelope or a small box... it's not very costly and it attracts more person...The thing about ebay is that you need to keep in mind that it COST something to post an auction... So you WANT to sell before the end of the auction so you do whatever you can and that includes free shipping. If you lost 10$ because you pay (honestly) the shipping and the item sells it's ok you will not pay many auction entry fees...

I have also been offering free shipping because of the weaker Canadian dollar. $80 USD = $100 Canadian.

If I'm in a hurry to sell something I'll search through completed items and offer mine with a BIN for the average selling price and free shipping, I usually sell pretty quick.

I have seen people sell items that are under the going eBay price with a buy it now offering free shipping. When you factor in the insertion fee + final value fee + the paypal fee you are already losing 15 to 20% of the final costs of your auction. They are basically giving their stuff away taking such a loss.

Shipping costs in Canada right now are a small fortune and seems to continually go up.As a Canadian buyer most people do not realize that we are subject to additional taxes and handling/brokerage fees on items that we purchase from other countries. It is almost like we are punished for doing business outside our country.<!--quoteo(post=288876:date=Dec 19 2008, 01:46 PM:name=BELLAMY)<div class=\'quotetop\'>QUOTE(BELLAMY @ Dec 19 2008, 01:46 PM) <a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=288876\"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class=\'quotemain\'><!--quotecI have also been offering free shipping because of the weaker Canadian dollar. $80 USD = $100 Canadian.<!--QuoteEnd</div><!--QuoteEEnd

I love it! I bought a Pokemon figure for my son that I could only find from a seller in Hong Kong - I paid $2 for the item with free shipping and it arrived within 2 weeks. There were others selling the same item, of course, but they all charged at least $4 shipping, so the FREE SHIPPING surely caught my eye. <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"Big Grin\" border=\"0\" alt=\"biggrin.gif\" />
