The burlap strengthens the mold but is not necessairly needed. If you use enough plaster and make the mold thick enough all around, then you don\'t need the burlap although it wouldn\'t hurt. The burlap is dipped in plaster as little strips and then placed all around the mask after some plaster has been built up off the surface.
