HLM, You said it, man. While I understand we, as humans, are a much more intelligent and sympathetic species, it\'s nature to enforce rules and boundaries with a form physical discipline. Now PLEASE, do NOT take that as me saying "beat your children!!!!". What I\'m trying to convey is this:
When a baby cub is playing too rough with mama lion, she gives the cub a swift claw or soft chomp. Merely to let the cub know "YOU SHOULD NOT DO THAT". It\'s how nearly every mammal on Earth learns.
When a child acts out, the smack to the rear end or hand sends very specific signals to the brain that inform the child that what they did was directly connected with a consequence. Many times, words or (less) severe forms of punishment do not make that direct connection as the "whipping" will do. (I learned a lot of this in psychology class, so if I\'m misinformed, please forgive me)
Again. PLEASE do not cast judgement on me for what I\'ve said. I still am not a father, so for all I know, the day my little one is born, I could decide I don\'t have the heart to strike my child. But for now, all I can say is this:
I got the belt as a child when I did wrong, and I like to think I\'ve grown up to be a decent, respectful adult. If I only got "time out" each time I acted out, I doubt I would have the respect for boundaries as I do now. And I thank both my mother and father for that.
