That's tough to say. I've been trying to decide that myself but given the proper lighting, this is great. The weathering is great on it.

The movie coat is black, but looks so weathered , muddy and old it does have some of that brownish rust color to it.So a brown coat would work, but I would make it a little blacker than the coat shown.flat black spray paint works just fine.

Here are some great shots of the jacket for reference. These have been posted before, but this will save you the trouble of searching them out.You can see in a couple of the pics where there is some visible brownish stains, but overall the jacket is black, old, faded, dirty, but black nonetheless.also notice that the flap in the back extends down to where the waist elastic is located.A few spritzes of grey primer works great to add that faded, dusty look to the black. Not too much, just enough to give it a light dusting.See 3rd pic under the backflap to see what I mean.

Wow I originally thought the coat was a dark navy blue... never thought it was black till I read this thread. So are the sleeves navy blue or black? In some of the pictures they REALLY look navy blue???

That is a trick of the camera.Black often resembles a dark blue in certain lighting.Just like certain shades of gray can look blue as well under some types of lighting. Here are some links to Jackets that would do well as a base coat.Keep in mind you will have to change the sleeves ,bulk up the collar, and add the flaps in the front and back.the flaps are fairly simple.Get a plain basic jacket(black is ideal, so you do not have to paint the whole damn coat)that is bigger than the main coat.Cut it off at the level right below your man boobs, so that you have sort of a halter jacket all the way around , and cut the sleeves off this too.The back of the halter jacket should be just above that ridge in the main coat that contains the drawstring.Slip that part over the main coat and glue it right over it.Keep the glue mostly in the upper shoulders, upper back, and around the edge of the collar.Put that whole coat over a inside out quilted flannel that has also been cut in half basically, and secure that together.Or you can sew the flannel sleeves on.your choice. After it is all constructed you can go about coloring the green parts of the coat.I spray paint all my clothes as well adding some acrylic here and there.Dye just does not do the job IMO.Make sure you do not glue the flap areas down .they will not flare out if you do.Here are some links,The first 2 coats would work better since they have the slanted pockets like the movie coat, and you will have to remove the hood and replace it with a beefy collar.http://cgi.ebay.com/GAP-RED-MILITARY-LONG-...%3A1|240%3A1318http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Dutch-Army-Fie...%3A1|240%3A1318http://cgi.ebay.com/1960-NAVY-USAF-MILITAR...%3A1|240%3A1318
