wow, i love collecting masks and other horror collectibles. i have been doing it since i was 10 years old. that is 29 years of collecting and i can not wait to see what comes out next. i love this hobby. i can't even understand this thread. almost everyone that i know thinks i am a freak for this, but i thought this was my safehouse. i hope that i am not wrong.mike

This <i>is</i> a strange thread to start in a mask-collecting forum. Are you trying to rain on people's parade here? If so, you're in the wrong place. No one here who's spent hundreds or thousands of dollars on masks make the same mistakes in handling masks that the general population does. While yes, latex is a natural product which inevitably decays, so is human flesh. It's like asking what's the point of living? You're just going to die eventually anyways.I have latex masks from the early 1980's in my collection that are in as pristine condition as they were when I first bought them. <!--coloro:#FFFF00<span style=\"color:#FFFF00\"><!--/coloroWhat other purchased item (can you think of) that has the lifespan over 20 years? <!--colorc</span><!--/colorc<b>Clothes = nope. (even if they don't wear thin, the styles usually wear out)Cars = nope. (at least not without a lot of work)Food = nope.TV's = certainly not.Any type of technological device = hell no. They'll all be outdated.</b>Other than a house, there's virtually nothing that can be purchased with money that is worth buying - if you expect to have worth out of it for over 20 years. My masks, however, have done just that. They've provided me enjoyment for over 20 years and counting.

For me, I buy masks to display, just like you would any other piece of artwork such as an oil painting or sculpture.By taking care of these items and treating them properly, they can last a LONG time.You also have to realize that most of the artists who created these pieces did so because they have a passion for doing it.By buying, displaying, trading, and sharing, you are supporting these artists and validating their art for them personally.I know the artist and history of every mask in my collection, and gladly share this info with whoever visits my home and see my display. Seeing people who had no idea that something like this even existed, or just plainly took it for granted as something they would see in the party shops every fall, actually show interest and amazement at each individual piece is priceless. Shouldn't feed the trolls <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"\" border=\"0\" alt=\"smile.gif\" />Made me wonder though.. I know there's general rules regarding the care of these masks, but is there a place to go read about how to properly care for and protect them?For example, what "dangers" does latex face? Is there a protective coating that can be added, etc. or are they all just kinda "destined to fail" at some random time?I've had a couple of masks go very very bad, and granted, I wasn't exceptionally careful with them, but I was a little suprised at how bad they got before I even realized it... First there were subtle color shifts and then hardening/cracking in those areas of the mask, and then "The Stench"™ began.The masks were just mass-produced inexpensive deals from a Halloween store, but I liked 'em. It was just a shame to have to get rid of them after having them for so long.

that def. happens with the mass pro. masks because the stores don't take care of them at all . that's not their job but only to get rid of them . you know the thing people around here say to rub your mask with baby powder or a damp cloth after wearing ? think about how many people put those masks on at the store and the one who work there don't clean them . the masks with hair have no hair within a week or so because for some reason they like to pull the mask off by the hair and with that being done , it rips it from the glue and sometimes the glue can be pulled off as well tearing the mask . some stores even leave masks by the window which is of course not good . so it really doesn't matter how well you keep your mask if you bought one of those because the damage has already been done . mike,
