The military is not at all like that. Also, you only get the knife that you are issued, the m9 bayonet. No weapons that you personally own can be brought on a military base.
Infantry fighting is not exciting, it is terrifying, even though it gets your adrenaline pumping.

Why learn these things? Well, personally, it fascinates me. Combat is an art form believe it or not, and a very difficult one to master, and a very valueable one to possess. I guess, for me it goes back to something my uncle said when I was young as a word of caution. I showed him a knife I had bought, and he said flat out leave it in my room, any knife pulled for defence unless you know how to use it, can be taken and used against you. I thought that was damn good advice, so I taught myself how to use one until I was quite competent with a bladed weapon. I\'m never without one now, and luckily, have never had cause to use it. But, if ever a situation arises where I have to defend myself, or my family, I will not become a victim and stand idely by. That is why I know all those ways to kill and hurt people, Darwinism at it\'s most rudimentary form, survival of the fittest, if I\'m attacked, I won\'t become extinct.
As for why I have a large collection, it\'s like anything really, same kind of draw as masks and props, plus, a knife is always handy, think how many times you use one in a day for mundane regular things.

Pardon my sarcasm. I served in the army, so I have a unique viewpoint on all of this. I could understand if you want to collect, but some of these posts would suggest that people want to use them and think it is \'cool\'. But, if that\'s not the case, forget what I said and carry on. Again, that\'s just the impression I got.

you don\'t realize how much you will use it until you actually carry one.

thanks for posting Trav, I didn\'t feel like typing that much, so I just typed \"self defense\" easy enough. eh...I still don\'t feel like typing.

Ahhh I gotcha Brunnen, and yeah I agree with you very much on that point too. Frankly, no it\'s not cool I know how to do all these things, it\'s sad, that this world has made it a necessity in my mind to learn how to defend myself with such prejudice. And I VERY much hope my knowledge goes unsed for good too, I really don\'t want to have to defend myself in that manner, or worse, get into CQB knife combat. With that, there is no real winner, one guy goes to the hospital for a very long time, and one guy goes to the morgue. If I had my qualms, I\'d very much like to stay out of either, but if pressed, I know I wouldn\'t be sent to the morgue.

I really do think you have a good point Brunnen, and one I preach all the time too. I\'ve had friends ask me to teach them techniques, I flat out refuse every time for that same reason. Because they\'re not ready to take it as deadly serious, they think it\'ll be \'neat\' to know how to do an 8 or 10 strike attack. Basically, I equate it to giving a kid a pack of matches, only a matter of time till something really bad happens.
