Liebesman makes date with a killer

Wed Feb 22, 1:14 AM ET

Jonathan Liebesman, director of the upcoming "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" prequel, is in negotiations to direct the remake of horror classic "Friday the 13th" for New Line Cinema.

"Friday" made Jason, the unstoppable hockey mask-wearing killer, a 1980s horror icon, though the serial killer made only a brief appearance in the final frames of the first movie. Jason didn\'t even don the famous mask until the third movie.

Jason will wear the mask for the remake, written by Mark Wheaton, which will incorporate components of the franchise\'s films. The setting will be that of the first movie, Crystal Lake.

Liebesman is wrapping production on the untitled "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" prequel, which, like the "Friday" remake, is produced by Platinum Dunes for New Line.

A Friday the 13th does fall in October this year, and there was speculation that the movie would be made quickly to capitalize on that. But Platinum Dunes and New Line already have scheduled the "Texas Chainsaw" prequel for release that month, on October 6. "Friday" will be a 2007 release.

I read it earlier. Sucks that it\'s 2007, but I guess you don\'t want to rush and make it suck?

If they weren\'t lazy with CGI and did ACTUAL effects like the old school days, films wouldn\'t take this long to come out. Most of the delays on the new movies are "we are trying to finish up the CGI and make it look the best."

The storyline sounds better than an exact remake of the orig. friday the 13th.
I agree that that Oct. 2006 seems kinda quick, id rather wait and see a solid movie. Im looking forward to the Chainsaw prequel, so that will keep me satisfied for awhile.

I don\'t care. I\'ll watch it. I\'m sure we all will.

And New Line is nowhere near as bad as Paramount was.

As long as there is jason, some fresh kills, and a new Hockey Mask for Mike to master, I will be satisfied. Smile

I\'m talking about how the studios treat the films and fans.

Paramount-never liked the films, doesn\'t care about the fans. we can\'t even get good copies of the films with a digital transfer.

New Line-Respects the character more then Paramount ever did, and gives us 2 disk dvds with lots of bonus features.

That\'s all I meant. New Line isn\'t as bad as Paramount

I agree with Ben Forsaken, because New Line at least keeps us fans occupied with films and stuff to enjoy with them. They know that the fans want to see new movies, and that\'s what they\'re giving us. I\'d rather it be a rebirth of the series than having to conform to the X and VS storyline, at least now we can take the series in a different direction. Just think... you never know, we might see a rebirth of Tommy Jarvis.
