A Little Info

I'm tossing around the idea of making a mask from a sculpture that I did. The only problem is I don't know how to make the mold. I do know how to do it within reason but I've been on youtube for hours now trying to find a "how to" on actually making the mask, but I've not seen a single one that shows the complete steps. If they are showing the complete steps, then there is something that I'm not seeing. Where I get confused is when it comes to pouring the latex...I understand that when you have to use the original sculpture to make the mold, but when that's done and you've got the mold itself complete what comes next? I know this probably sounds dumb, but I've never done this before so please bear with me....Imagine that I've got the front and back of my mold strapped together and ready to pour the latex...What do I do? How does the mask get hollow? If I pour the latex into the mold, then when it cures, won't I just have a big rubber head when I pull it out? Is there something else that goes into this that I'm missing. Every video that I've seen so far shows from pouring the latex on. I watch them fill the mold up and then they leave it sit for 24 hours or so, and when the come back, the mold is nice and hollow again with a nice coting of latex around the inside. They then break the mold apart and take the mask out.For anyone who's reading this and laughing, please let me applogize for my ignorance in this matter, but as I said this is my first time.Any help or how to steps would be greatly appreciated.-Joseph

Never done it personally but I hear about slosh or is it sluch molding? Pour some latex in, roll the mold around in your hands till you've coated the whole thing.. I don't know the details but I wouldn't fill the mold to the top. Except to make a master copy so you can make more molds from it.

You can fill your mold all the way up if you have enough latex. Let it sit until a skin starts to build up and then pour the latex back into its container and let the mold "drip" for a while. If you don't have enough latex to do that, simply pour it in the mold and slush it around back forth, coating the whole inside of the mold. You'll probably have to repeat that a few times.

Thank you very much for the information. I have another question if you don't mind. Supposing that I do have enough latex to fill the entire mold and the I pour it when that point comes, is the latex that I filled the mold with useless after that or would I able to reuse it? My only concern is that I don't want to waste an entire bucket just to do a mask. I really like the "slush" method that you both but it sounds like that's something that I'm definitely going to have to play with and watch carefully.Anyway if you could just let me know about the left over latex I'd greatly appreciate it.Thanks so much guys,Joseph

Heck yeah, it's still usable. Just pour it back into your container or whatever it's in. You can then rest the mold on like a milk crate or something and have it drip back into the container as well.

The latex slush dries not so much cures. it would NEVER EVER EVER dry if you let it sit in the mold...When you drain it, the pours in the mold sucks the water our of the latex and forms a skin.I suggest getting a book..way easier to learn that way
