Hey guys, I'm really into death, black, and slam metal and would like to learn how to read music and understand what I'm listening to (instrument wise) I mean obviously I know what the guitar, bass, and drums sound like but I want a more in depth understanding of whats being played, whats the best way to go about this? Are there any good sites that explain music theory, I tried google but it was pretty overwhelming. I'm not trying to learn how to play an istrument at this time, hope this makes sense, I know what breakdowns and blast beats are thats about it lol, I may have used the wrong term also by calling it music theory. Thanks in advance.I don't know if this helps but heres some bands I listen to regularlyDevourment, Putrid Pile, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Black Witchery, Sikfuk, Cock and Ball Torture, Vulvectomy, Digested Flesh, Vomit Remnants, etc.
Murder ascends it's beautiful face and sides with me. everlasting sound is
sweet. all i wanted, to not be alone, but still you always leave me. i want your
eyes fixed on me, so i can watch them as you scream. and you were so
beautiful. but now you'll rot. and no one will see your face. and no one will dare
speak your name. i won't remember your eyes. i won't remember the jealousy.

I got pretty heavy into it and got to the point where I couldnt find what I wanted with websites. So I found a guitar guru who gave me weekly lessons on different things and I wrote everything down in an old note book. I still look back through it to refresh my memory. I use it for educational purposes only I dont follow it too much on purpose as Im one of those "if it sounds good, thats what I'll play" disregarding whether or not a certain note "fits". I would highly suggest www.cyberfret.com as they have a lot of really useful basic info there. Hope that helps.

You could always search Wikipedia to learn a lot about it (and just about everything else), but I would recommend taking a college course or more on the subject. Also, I doubt you're going to find anything interesting about death metal compared to all sorts of other types of music out there, as far as music theory is concerned...
