At the risk of being pelted with sharp pointy things, I just gotta ask....
They are STRAY dogs...What are you going to do with them? There\'s only so many people that will adopt these things, and the rest are going to be gassed. Then the carcasses will just be burned. At least with a fisherman, he is going to be catching something that will feed others.
Now don\'t get me wrong, in no way do I condone anything like this, but I CAN see the point of the fishermen here, in that they are A) controlling the population of strays, and B) Feeding others by doing so.
Believe me, I can understand why you are all upset, but again, look at it from their point of view?
A couple of years ago, I was talking online with someone from Australia. They were telling me that they were shooting Kangaroos like crazy, because they were getting into their gardens and such, and destroying crops. Anyone that has REALLY looked at a kangaroo, and seen how cute they are, would be appalled by the shooting of them. At the time I wondered why they just didnt take stronger measures to stop the kangaroos from getting at the crops, but then I began to see the farmer\'s point of view.
Again, strays, being either dogs, or cats, even carry the risk of carrying diseases and such. Using them as bait, both controls the population explosion, and also feeds others. A big shark could yeild lots of food for others.
And another point is, that this is not being done in America. We seem to have an overinflated sense of justice in this world, and tend to impose our views on other cultures. What may seem horrific to us, might be normal everyday practice to others in the world.
Let me ask this....Is it RIGHT that Eskimos can kill whales, and not say, Japanese fishermen? A whale is a sentient being, I personally think, and yet, Eskimos can kill one to feed their villages. Is that morally right?
Again, I want to stress that in no way do I condone baiting with live animals, be they dogs or cats. I am just trying to show the other point of view.

C\'mon Bull, remember that one time, back at band camp. I saw you sitting \'round the campfire munching on that stray Collie? You asked if I wanted white meat or dark meat? I called you a sicko. Then I smoked some happy hippy stuff, and the dark meat started smelling pretty good all roasted on the spit? And we sat there and chowed down? Remember?

    Ah, good times.

Chuwawa\'s are kinda gamey though. *picks meat out of teeth*

Because regardless that they are "stray dogs", these things still feel pain. And Id say its a little worse being hooked through the snout, and draged behind a boat, swallowing gallons of water, and then being ripped to shreads by Jaws.

So if you are trying to say that isnt worse then being put down by a vet, youre wrong. I could give a shit what happens to them after they are dead, because they are in fact DEAD. They CANT feel the pain.

Both things are screwed in this situation, they are both going to die, yet, some french dude will have a nice shark to stuff. Whats good about killing a dog for a fishing trip?

And Bull, I respect your comment for the opposite side views and whatnot.....not fully directed towards ya, just how I feel when I look through those articles

"But why\'s he only have one leg?"
Well, a dog like that, you don\'t eat all at once!

I agree Puckface, and I\'d be the first to say kill the dogs first, then do it, or even have some sort of an arrangement with the dog catcher, to take the dogs and cat strays that have been put down, and use those for bait...
I seriously doubt to a shark, it matters all that much whether the dog or cat is alive or dead. If the animal in question is dead already, towing it from the back of a boat is going to make it move about, like a wounded animal anyways.
BUT....There would still be people that would be complaining that the treatment of the dead animals was inhumane, or some ought thing.
Believe me, I have been a dog owner before, and loved it dearly, and to this day, 20 years in passing, I still mourn him. I am currently a cat owner (6 of em, to be exact), and I did get outraged at the article. No animal deserves to be treated such.

Quote:They eat dogs in China. Dogs are just a food source.

And I love Tuna. Just love \'em. They\'re all soft and scaley.

They also cull female children in China as well as execute people for speaking out against the government. I don\'t think China is a country we should look up to. In addition this is not going on in China it is going on in France and to the best of my knowledge they don\'t eat dogs in france they keep them as pets. I don\'t know of any country that keeps Tuna as pets. The fact that you keep trying to defend this practice has shown just what type of person you are.

I don\'t think that the sharks being caught are being used as meat, I think that the sharks being used are stuffed, and mounted, or just used for their fins, etc. The fact that this is being done to LIVE animals is the worst part about it. I don\'t think that ANYONE would have a problem if these fishermen were collecting road kill to drag behind their boats, but stray dogs, domesticated dogs, or wild dogs, this practice shouldn\'t be carried out on anything that is alive...
