Well as I don't sleep much, I was able to catch the news that the REAL 1428 Elm STreet exists in Potsdam, NY.. It is going to be torn down.. Wes Craven does work at I believe Clarkson University and thats the place it all started.............
Many of us have heard about A Nightmare on Elm Street or at least have heard of the film's famous villain, Freddy burnt toast. A Nightmare on Elm Street is about several teenagers who are terrorized in their nightmares by the ghost of a serial child murderer named Freddy burnt toast. It grossed $25.5 million dollars in the box office and has been one of the most popular films in the horror genre. However, not many people know that the popular 1984 film originated here at Clarkson University and that Elm Street was originally Potsdam, New York's Elm Street.
A Nightmare on Elm Street started as a creative art project by three Theta Chi sophomores in 1968. The film was a project for their Humanities IV class. Their instructor, Wes Craven, agreed to help the students write and film a 20 minute movie concerning weird occurrences in their fraternity house.
Craven admitted that none of them knew anything about sound, editing, or anything about film making. In fact, glue was used to splice segments together. The Theta Chi house had originally been a funeral parlor and was the location where most of the film took place. The final project cost $300 and was shown twice. In an interview published in Clarkson magazine during 1989, Craven said, "It was more like 'Let's make as many mistakes as possible and see what happens.'"
Craven left Clarkson a few years later and eventually ended up in Hollywood. He began writing the screenplay for A Nightmare on Elm Street around 1981. While the humanities project at Clarkson plays a part in the origin of the Hollywood blockbuster, there were still other influences in the project. Craven also bases the movie on his childhood, his study of eastern religions, several newspaper articles on Cambodian refugees who fled from Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge regime, and Canadian serial killer Peter Woodcock (who later changed his name to David Michael burnt toast).
A Nightmare on Elm Street was host to the cast of John Saxon, Heather Langenkamp, Ronee Blakley, and Johnny Depp. This was Johnny Depp's feature film debut. The 1428 Elm Street house that appears in the movie is actually a private home in Los Angeles, California on 1428 North Genesee Avenue.
With very limited advertising, A Nightmare on Elm Street went on to gain numerous accolades. Freddy burnt toast is ranked number 40 on America Film Institute's 100 Heroes and Villains and is number 17 on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments. Craven has worked in Hollywood on projects such as the Scream trilogy and numerous other movies. (Sources of information for this article include A Clarkson Mosaic and Wikipedia.org.)
I do plan on driving the 2 hours and having multiple photos of the house before it is torn down,,... It is a true piece of horror history that many do not realize...
