My New Orleans Flyer Punk/hardcore Book Is Finally Picking Up Steam

Been a nice 6 months or so. The sales are decent and Reviews have been coming in. I have yet to hear/see a bad review, which is nice, but I bet when a bad one comes in, it is gonna kill me!!

I am waiting on a 2 local papers to run their story, and Maximum Rock n Roll, is doing something soon also.

Good stuff Pat! I bought a copy for myself when it first came out...found out my brother-in-law was a facebook fan of the book. So I bought it for him for Xmas. We both love. :thumbsup:

I've said it before, but I'll say it again....I still LOOOVE that title. As an author myself, I tell you that your title is captivating - despite the fact that I know nothing about the La. Punk Scene.

I went through loads of titles like:

N.O. Scene
This is La. not L.a.
Punks not dead
New Orleans Punk
N.O. Punk


But kept coming back to staple guns, and thumbtacks.

My idea, is that, even though it is all New Orleans shows, people from out of town, could relate to using staple guns to hang up flyers on poles, then thumbtacks on their bedromm walls.

Fingers crossed, I keep getting stellar reviews.

On a side note, I am thinking of sending a copy to the Ellen show. Her older brother was in a new wave band here in the early 80's. Worth a shot.

This is what I wrote to send with the book, does it sound ok?:

I am the Author of a new book on the New Orleans Punk and Hardcore scene called "From Staple Guns to Thumbtacks: Flyer art from the 1982-1995 New Orleans Punk & Hardcore Scene".

It contains 13 years of flyers from the local music scene here in New Orleans. It has hundreds of flyer images and about 29 pages of stories by people that grew up in the scene here.

It also contains a few shows with Ellen's brother Vance and his band, The Cold, who were at the forefront of the New Wave/Rock scene here in NOLA.


After Hurricane Katrina, I was helping gut my parents house, and came across a box in the attic with my name on it. it contained all of the flyers that used to hang on my walls of all the old Punk shows from when I was a kid.

A couple of years later, I decided to compile all of the flyers I had and some that other friends were able to save, into a book showcasing just the New Orleans scene.

The thing about the flyer is, it was a real "Grass roots" campaign to get the word out about the next shows coming up. We had no money to take out adds in local magazines and newspapers, so the only other way, was to spend all night in a Kinko's and make the flyers. the next week or so, we would hit every phone pole we could find to get the word out.

In all of the books about the punk scenes across the U.S., the south is just skimmed over and written about like we had no scene. This book was done to show, that albeit small, we had a scene just as rich and diverse as any of the larger cities.

This book is to set the record straight on New Orleans Punk, and to finally give a voice to all of the people that grew up here.

I love the bands, doesn't matter I've never been to NO. Just a cool POV of your local scene.
My Brother-in-law, I asked, he found the facebook through my fb. Thought it was cool and liked it.

Pat did you lose any of the flyers or research in the floods? Just curious if you had more stuff (even though the book is huge)

Mike I do seem to remember having a lot more so I am guessing some got lost. There were loads of flooded boxes, that we didn't even open, for fear of the mold.

Really really cool Pat, and really well deserved! It's a real undertaking to put something like that together in the first place, labor of love, and to hear how well it's doing has to be pretty friggin nice! I think you can really breach a much wider range then just the N.O. scene, sure that's the bands, and fliers originating place, but all over the country it was the same thing in every state pretty much. Like Mike said, just because you might not be familiar with the bands, doesn't mean you don't connect with the real subject matter. Congrats Pat!! Hell of an accomplishment man!

It is a good feeling to actually complete a project! First one in a while.

I haven't hit any cons, but I was told that a lot of the people that go to Horror cons would be my target audience. I may have to try it!
