If nothing else it reminds people to look at what side of the "good vs. evil" equation they're on at a time when they AREN'T completely unrational and pissed off (or pretending to be). That's the kinda' stuff that can do some long term good.

The police also face that same threat, likely moreso, but it fails to materialize. Their attitude despite their obvious weakness is useful because it adds a wildcard to the mix, suggesting that the aggressor might not know the full story if this pipsqueak is standing up to him, and should err on the side of caution.The other thing is that face to face solitary engagement is actually not the normal method for them. Going toe-to-toe with a drunk, or a cokehead, isn't always going to end well, and most of them realize that. Most of them call the police on trouble, rather than jumping into it themselves, unless it looks like someone needs saving.. in which case they can often get that job done simply by being a witness, and by being there to help pick up the pieces. Most folks won't rob, rape or kill when there's a witness standing there nearby in a big stupid cape calling the cops on their cellphone.Some of these guys do a nightly patrol simply to "be seen" as an annonymous community narc that you better not commit crimes in-front of, or the cops are gonna' take you away, and/or to help little old ladies cross the street and that kinda' thing, and it's effective. They put on a show, and kinda' hope to inspire folks to do helpful stuff for each other, and report crimes, etc. Their armor wont stop bullets, but I don't see any bullets.Many of them are glorified Neighborhood Watch folks that use costumes to attract more attention to their cause, and are certainly comic book inspired.. much like a healthy sample of law enforcement officers.I'm not exactly "all tapped in" on this stuff, but I've been watching some of these folks for a few years now.
