I wrote a paper on this kind of stuff recently. The reason you see the illusion like that is because of the way the "cones" (which there are about 6 or 7 million of) and "rods" in your eyes detect color/black and white. Cones are for color and rods are for black and white. When you stare at the black "+" the pink dots go away because the rods are active in the eye. The non-existent green dot you see because your peripheral vision is picking up color still but is being confused because of your focus on the "+".

Hope I didn\'t bore anyone with that! Rolleyes

Yes it is interesting. So interesting I have to learn it twice. Once in my psychology class and once on here lol.You can actually know where they are too. Have someone go behind ya with two colored pencils and have you look straight ahead and have the person creep up with the pencils and see which one you see first. Then do it again this time with darker colors and see which one they see first and ask them to try and guess color which would be very hard.

Another thing is if you take a piece of paper and draw two circles about 5 or 6 inches from each other. Then put the paper a good length in front of the face and close one eye and focus on just one circle while still seeing the other and slowly brind it towards your face! If you do it slow enough the circle you are not focusing on should disappear. This thread actually reminded me that I have a report to due on the Poggendorff Illusion.
