Question For Sculptors

What would be a good clay for begginners? I know alot of people like to use oil based clay but I've heard of some who like to use water based as well? Also correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't wated based clay harden over time and is non re-usable?Also since I have very limited knowlage and experiance with sculpting I was eying the Mark Afery sculpting DVD and was wondering if that was any good.

When I first started sculpting I used Oil based clay and it was a nightmare. I really don't think it's a good clay for beginners from a personal point of view. I would go with WED clay personally (water based). It does dry out and become unusable but if you spray it down with water everyday it will last a very very long time, as long as it remains moist. It's fairly cheap as well, you can get 50lbs for like $25.

Mark Alfrey's DVDs are great. He's a pretty cool dude too, emailed me back and forth and answered many questions and provided some good tips when I ordered from him.He uses Chavant NSP Medium, which I highly recommend. Many people use water based clay since it's less expensive, but it does dry out if you don't keep it moist and covered. Oil based sometimes is harder at room temperatures, but will never dry out. This is great for people like me who take a long time to finish detailing a sculpt. I like the harder variety since you can tool finer details, and it holds up shape really nice. But you have to warm it first to soften it up.Also, if you intend to make silicone molds, make sure your clay is sulfer-free.
