Cyclops Visor Wip

Something I\'ve been working on lately in between my bust work schedule. My lady and I decided that we\'d go as Cyclops and Phoenix this Halloween (when I\'m not sporting "whitey", of course) so I got started on my own custom Cyclops visor. I\'ve been kicking myself lately for not buying the official replicas a few years back. Then, they never really went over $50 bucks. Now they are hard to find under $200! So it\'s safe to say I was gonna make my own.

I started with a cheap visor you can probably find at any local costume shop. I popped out the lens and took a heat gun to the surface and reshaped the opening to be a bit thinner. I then sanded it all down and added 2 small plastic inserts on each side of the opening. Then, I made a trip to Dollar Tree (where nothing is over $1) searching for odds and ends that may make decent additions to the visor. I came across a pair of headphones and instantly knew they\'d be a great feature. I got home, pulled them off the headband, popped out the speakers, and walah. Perfect fit. I just added 5/8 screws at the base and eyeglass screws at the tip. Then, for aesthetics, I took a few plastic drywall inserts, slit them in half, and glued them in place. Overall, it took some time, but doing another would be a breeze now that I know how and what to use.

Right now it\'s just has a primer coat but I plan on sanding it down a bit more and adding a gun-metal grey base. Then I will go and highlight certain features to make it pop. The red lens is also temporary but a very cheap alternative. It\'s made of a clear, plastic envelope I got from Dollar Tree as well. (3 in one pack). Hopefully I can snag a few LED\'s to go inside the visor to really set it off.

AAAAANNNYWAAYS, here are a few pics for now. I know there are other comic nerds out there who may appreciate this. All in all, I have less than $10 in the visor. Figured it was much better than $200+. It may not be official, but I dig it. Here are a few pics of what I have so far.

This is just beyond cool scott. This is the type of stuff I have been really getting into over the past 2-3 years. The feeling of making something cool out of all sorts of randomness is a great feeling. I love the uniqueness of it...

Scott...that\'s awesome man! Very cool that you figured out how to make something so pro looking out of cheap materials and even cooler that you shared it with all of us! I think your costumes are going to be amazing...especially with your creativity and attention to detail!

thanks a ton, fellas! I\'m glad you all dig it! I finally got around to getting a color I liked for the base. I picked up some lacquer paint from Hobby Lobby called "graphite dust" and it\'s absolutely spot on to the color I had imagined in my head. It\'s almost a gunmetal grey but with tiny sparkles. It really sets it off. Now all I need to do is select a visor I\'m happy with, then possibly install some LEDs.
