Does Anyone Use Mm Oil Clay?

ok so I have some MM oil-based clay and I started a sculpture. I heated it for a long time to make it soft and workable, and I got it on my armature, but then a few minutes later when it cooled it was so hard I couldn\'t work it with my hands anymore. If anyone could offer some suggestions or help I would really appreciate it.

I use MM clay myself, just started with it again & yes it can be a pain in the ass but once you get use to it, it is not so bad. After you get your clay nice & warm & on your armature your right it will cool down & get pretty darn hard, the best thing is get a swivel lamp & set some clay under it, keep the lamp close to the clay so the clay off to the side keeps soft & warm, this way you can keep adding to your sculpture. To take away from your sculpture ( dig in ) use a rake tool made out of a scroll saw or jigsaw blade, heat the blade up & bend it into a pipe, it looks like a mini rake, this way you can scrap away & get your forms & anatomy the way you want, with MM clay you will use metal loop tools alot, just remember with this stuff you can\'t really go as fast as you can with WED so just tool away at it. You will become quite confortable with it once you get use to it. You can also use a hair dryer on the sculpture to soften it up a bit, hope this somewhat helps.

i wouldnt use wed unless ur a pro sculpter.

Actually alot of the top sculptors use chavant, especially when sculpting on lifecasts, Wed is great if you are not sculpting on an armature unless you are building the piece out alot, the thinner it is the faster it will dry but with proper care you can work on a sculpture for quite some time, just keep it covered or wrapped with wet paper towel, spray it ever so often but your best bet is to use oil based, not much to look after. Wed is great for doing big projects, it can be moved much, much quicker then oil based & as VF stated you do have to no your anatomy when using it because it will eventually dry out & you don\'t have forever to use it so you do have to no what your doing & alot of the top guys that sculpture from scratch do use WED. Practice with your MM clay & it will come to you for sure, everyday is another day to practice & get better so I am sure you will have something great to share in the future with us.

there is nothing wrong with monster makers clay
all the types mentioned here has its pros and cons
personally if I don\'t have good ventelation when using roma (recommended) I get a headache, my throat itches, and my sinuses get f*cked up.
Wed clay has limited life span and it is more difficult to spend six months on a sculp if you don\'t have a lot of time on your hands.. and it grows mushrooms.
Roma is easier to smooth, and WED is easier for making large sculptures (like masks) but monster makers doesn\'t have as many negatives besides it gets hard (wich isn\'t even a negative).
Use a space heater and get the form of your sculpture down...then you won\'t be complaining about the clay being hard when you are trying to do your fine detailing.

PS - if your hands aren\'t strong enough to push around the clay, they aren\'t going to be strong enough to get the sculpture out of the mold. Use the clay and stop being a girly man. :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:
