There are many ways to weather copper and brass (which will get this disired effect but will not chip off) You can use a solution called liver of sulfer that you can get at most craft or hobby stores, it stinks like hell but it works great. or you could use acetone which is VERY dangerous and will eat through almost anything even gloves. or you could also look on ebay for "antiquing solutions" this will give you a few options.
