I'm assuming they decided to go that way because they realized the first two aren't as popular with a younger fan base, and knew that the "jason with the hockey mask" is the most iconic version of the character. Although I'm going to be a little bummed not so see the first two redone completely before we jump right into 3, I suppose they made a wise decision in the long run.
