Although it was never displayed, for the Sith to keep order, there would obviously be more violence. Things may have been settled differently "a long time ago", but I doubt those who went against the Sith ended with a simple "blast off" or lightsaber duel.I can imagine someone as dark as Vader or the emperor dealing with those kind of matters a bit more harshly.
