When you reset/unplug the router and/or modem.. fish out the battery if it has one, otherwise you're not really resetting it. 
Your cable modem only handles one feed.. your router/rub is what allows you to use more than one connection.Plug your modem into the "internet" port of the router (or the #1 if there's none clearly labelled "input" or "internet")
