Thanks for the comments.@dzetwo: I used a black fabric paint, watered down to achieve the right color. I sprayed it onto the sweater and also spot treated with a rag to get the right look. I cut the sweater with scissors into the patterns I wanted, frayed the exposed edges, and then made sure it wouldn't unravel by re-weaving and knotting threads at key points. I also treated exposed edges with a product called "Fray Block" to further secure it.
