It could be something simple as bad RAM. If your system uses two sticks of RAM, remove one and reboot. If it doesn't work swap out the sticks and reboot with the second stick. If you know what type of RAM it uses maybe pick up a cheap stick and give it a shot.... or borrow one if you can just to try. Otherwise you may have to take it to a computer shop. Things like this can be difficult to diagnose but RAM is an easy and cheap place to start. I've had a similar encounter with an old system and luckily it turned out to be bad RAM.
