this is done in sculpy right? well have you thought about using a heat gun on it, it'll firm it up enough to cast up, i did this a few years ago on a hoggle bust i made, worked well enough to get the mould done, just an idea, just take your time and keep it moving, you don't want to burn it

Thanks, Dougie, Pluto, Joseph, Jason, Russ, and Frosty!! <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"\" border=\"0\" alt=\"biggrin.gif\" /> You guys rock. I'm currently still waiting on pictures to finish the "droopy" side's neck, and the back of his head. After that, I'll be browsing over to Smooth-On.com to buy their "brush-on silicone starter kit", which contains almost everything I need to make the mold, minus the lazy susan and mixing cups/sticks that I still haven't stocked up on. I'm really itching to get this thing done now!<!--quoteo(post=285615:date=Nov 29 2008, 06:09 AM:name=frosty)<div class=\'quotetop\'>QUOTE(frosty @ Nov 29 2008, 06:09 AM) <a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=285615\"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class=\'quotemain\'><!--quotecthis is done in sculpy right? well have you thought about using a heat gun on it, it'll firm it up enough to cast up, i did this a few years ago on a hoggle bust i made, worked well enough to get the mould done, just an idea, just take your time and keep it moving, you don't want to burn it<!--QuoteEnd</div><!--QuoteEEndYessir. I used Super Sculpey. The Sculpey is built-up on top of a makeshift, simple styrofoam form that I fashioned using hot glue and a dremel. At its thickest spot, the clay is around 2 inches thick. At its thinnest, only around 1/3 of a centimeter. Because of that, I'm rather afraid that using extreme heat anywhere *near* my sculpture could cause a problem for the armature underneath, which I plan to reuse. Not to mention that Sculpey is almost never uniform in its baking time unless your piece is flat and symmetrical. It also tends to crack if it's overcooked, and there is already one small crack in the neck... <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"\" border=\"0\" alt=\"confused.gif\" /> I don't want to cause any further breakage or stress issues with this stuff, and all of the baking methods I've heard sound extremely risky with this piece's construction in mind.I don't know, though...I thought about just letting the sculpture sit around to dry out for another month, then molding the piece after it has lost a lot of its moisture content. That way, it'll be a lot more firm and less likely to get damaged while brushing on that first layer of silicone. Do you think that could work? Thanks again and cheers,Ryan
