So they're remaking the Karate Kid and I'm sure most of you have already seen the previews for it. In the main trailer they've been playing on tv, Jackie Chan tells Will Smith'sson (the main kid in the movie) that he will teach him Kung Fu. Now, forgive me if I sound ignorant, but aren't Kung Fu and Karate fairly different? I'm completely oblivious to martial arts, so I was just confused as to why they would entitle the movie "Karate Kid" if they are actually going to portray Kung Fu. (if there is a difference, that is...)Perhaps my man Kaizu could enlighten me? Tongue

Kung fu is Chinese martial arts. Karate is Japanese martial arts. The movie really should be titled Kung-Fu Kid. Gotta love Hollywood.

Yes Kung-Fu is a Chinese martial arts and Karate is Japanese. Two totally seperate martial arts by two seperate cultures. The fact that it's called The Karate Kid and takes place in China and in the trailer Jackie Chan speciffically states "I will teach you real Kung-Fu" is quite hilarious.Seriously though the original is a classic that shouldn't have been remade and this is just another example that Hollywood is running out of original ideas.

Not making a case for the movie... but...Kung-Fu in Chinese means skill achieved through hard work and practice, and does not necessarily have to mean martial arts skill.Karate in Japanese means Empty hand and often refers to the martial art originating in Okinawa. Karate in part is based off of Chinese Kenpo...So, it can sorta kinda maybe make sense for Jackie Chan to tell The Son of Will Smith he will teach him Kung-Fu in The Karate Kid.... I'm still not looking forward to it though

yes, "Kung-Fu Kid" has been what everyone said this film should have been called. It looks like a stupid remake anyway. Little kindergarten kids fighting? lmao, whatever.

Hey Puck, I agree with everyone that the title is rather decieveing. It actually is somewhat a slap in the face to both sides just from the title.lolI think after looking at the new trailers the title is beginning to make sense.Dre is the new kid who comes to China, does Karate but finds out that his techniques aren't a match for the local bullies, thus gets tagged with the name The Karate Kid.Calling him that is to say that he's an outsider and foreigner since the local Chinese do not practice (especially)Karate.I can live with it now but I'll have to see the film first.lol

I think they should have hired Dan Inosanto(former lead student of Bruce(the best and still the best martial artist that ever lived)Lee)and made a film about the art of Jeet Kune Do....but with midgets..who wouldn't want to see that?
